Exceptional Vintage 1961 TOSHIBA 9TM-40 “ROBOT HEAD” Transistor Radio in Box NR:
$559.99

Marty & Sue Bunis started the New England Antique Radio Club (NEARC) back in 1988.They wrote the first Collector’s Guide to Antique Radios in 1991 and three more before turning it over to Slusser. Marty would be the President of NEARC for many years. Marty’s true love of old radios was in Transistor Sets, and mine was too. To me and Marty, the ones worth owning are SMALL PIECES of ART that can be held in your hand and enjoyed. I contributed heavily to Marty and Sue’s two Collector Guides to Transistor Radios published in 1994 and 1996. Marty & Sue came to my home many times to photograph and document my collection. Many of the pictures in those books are from radios in my collection.

I am now the current President of NEARC. Some couch potato on some radio forum will say I shouldn’t tell you that, but I think you should know who you are buying from. You will find me and my son’s name in the credits of Marty & Sue’s books (Bruce and Ross Phillips).

I’ve collected Antique and Vintage Electronics for over 40 years, and sold a lot of tube radios on in the last 20 years, and will continue to do so. I haven’t sold as many Transistor sets, as I think if you are going to have this Beautiful Piece of Art in your hand, it should work-WELL- Very WELL.

I stopped buying transistors on years ago- mainly because I was disappointed in 90% of what I bought. ANYONE can sell ANYTHING on . Unfortunately many sellers don’t understand what they are selling. Just because it makes a scratchy sound when you try to tune it, doesn’t mean it works, and don’t get me started on the number of chips and cracks that were on the „Perfect“ transistors I bought on .

For many years these sets have been on shelves, until recently when I met a local man who enjoys restoring transistor radios. He changes capacitors and other needed parts, aligns the set and polishes them. They are like new, and truely everything you and I remember from our childhoods inthe 1950s and 1960s.I am Type AA, and I have no patients for this type of repair work, but Lenny loves it.

Now, before everyone asks for Lennie’s contact info to fix the millions of nonworking transistors out there, I can supply him with more work than he can do for the rest of our lives, and will not give out his info-Sorry.

This week I am saleing 11 exception, working well transistor radios- all restored by Lenny. Some are excellent examples of early American sets, and some are very rare and excellent examples of Iconic Japanese sets.

My guess, based on 40 + years of experience, over half of these radios you have never seen before and may never again. As Eric would say, „These are Truly the BEST of The BEST!!!

I need to raise some serious quick $$$ for home improvements, or I would never sell them at all. The fact that they are small and lightweight makes them great choices for my USA and International Friends. Don’t miss these as you may not have this opportunity again!!!

Here for your consideration is an Exceptional Vintage 1961 TOSHIBA 9TM-40 Reverse Plastic “Robot Head” Transistor Radio in original box(fair condition) with original leather case and Toshiba microphone- yes, I said microphone! I do not believe the Sheik of Qatar could buy a better one with all his money!! This is the BEST of the BEST-Period!! This Steel Grey and Black Transistor Radio is just “EYE CANDY”, and an incredible piece of Art in your hand.

This 57 year old Nine Transistor Radio in excellent restored and working condition. There is no other transistor like this “Robot”, and I know of no other Coat pocket transistors that came with a microphone. Yes, you can use this radio as a portable PA system because the radio and the microphone both work great.

This was surely Toshiba’s best and strangest designs!! It is cool, retro, and space age. This set sold for $49.95 new in 1961. You can understand why it is so rare today. I have seen maybe four of these Toshiba 9TM-40s in my lifetime, and this is the only Toshiba 9TM-40 I have ever seen in the box.

This 9 transistor Japanese “Coat Pocket” set is 3.5” x 6” x 2”. Lenny changed the capacitors, fixed the dial light circuit, tuned and cleaned this set. It looks awesome. There are NO cracks on this radio. There are some light edge chips between the two case sides where some Idiot tried to pry the case open without taking the handle out( it also holds the case together). I do not see the dial light up when I press the button.

This set plays LOUD and clear with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and nice tone. There is a slight background white noise until you turn the volume up. The volume and the tuning knob both work well with no scratchy sound from the tuner, or when bringing the volume up and down. This set includes new alkaline batteries and is ready to play for you. I do not believe the Sheik of Qatar could buy a better one with all his money!! This is the BEST of the BEST-Period!! Good Luck, Radioorphanage !!

On Jan-13-18 at 09:43:37 PST, seller added the following information:

In my original description, I mentioned that I didn\'t see the dial lamp working. An er quizzed me about it, because Lenny\'s info said he has worked on it. So I took another look, an realized DA- if you put the separate AA battery in the lamp circuit in the back cover, it works fine. Not the brightest dial light I\'ve ever seen, but wait, I guess it is the brightest, and the only transistor radio dial light I\'ve ever seen. Pictures attached. Good Luck,Radioorphanage
