Here is a fantastic and VERY RARE early American snuff bottle / jar / utility! In a rectangular form, with chamfered corners, this bottle is embossed on the front panel \"LEONARD APPLEBY\'S / RAIL ROAD / MILLS SNUFF\" in bottle lettering. One of the best snuff bottles out there! This one is a deep reddish amber color, and likely a dug bottle. It has a nice tubular pontil base, and lots of glass debris embedded into the glass. It also has a typical flaredout \"snuff-style\" rim.
I believe these to be from the Midlantic area, and the Appleby\'s factory to be in New Jersey. This may have been a predecessor to the Helmes snuff company. The \"Railroad\" reference is interesting, and would likely have good crossover appeal to railroad memorabilia collectors as well. Another \"red amber\" example sold in the famed Mebane collection some years ago for over $8000 plus the premium.
Condition is good, but has a couple of issues. There is a cork pry small chipin the underside of the lip and a little edge roughness, which I pictured.I am also told that there is a very faint 1/4\" fissure on a side panel, but I really have yet to find it. Thereis some minor wear and scratches.Bottle displays GREAT and looks nice on a shelf. Here is your chance to save big, and get a great rarity on your shelf!!
I fully guarantee authenticity.
