EXTREMELY RARE ENGLISH BLACK GLASS OCTAGONAL (gilt inscribed) GIN BOTTLE, 1770 For Sale

An absolutely stunning, rare and unrepeatable octagonal blownblack glass bottle of beautiful dark olive green color, the front with a gilt cartouche inscribed ‘GIN\'; English, circa 1760 - 1780.

As early bottles go they don\'t come much rarer than this one!! This isa fabulous and rare example from the second half of the eighteenth century - definitely a keeper!

The bottle is a very rare shape with an octagonal body narrowing to a long, pulled neck. The base has a sand pontil mark and the body was probably blown into a casemold. The string-rim is located just below the lip. The color, as you can see in the 12 photos is absolutely beautiful and would look fantastic with back-lighting. The overall height is 9 inches.

The condition of the bottle is great but not absolutely perfect. The gilt lettering has some wear in places, but that is to be expected. In addition there is a very fine and very difficult-to-see crack which follows the left hand edge of the part of the cartouche containing the word GIN, upwards for about 1/2 inch and then follows the curve of the gilt line which formsthe top of the cartouche as it turns to the right for about1 1/2 inches. It would take exceptional eyesight to spot the crack line.

Thebottle is absolutely solid and completely stable so it is likely the crack doesn\'t go right through the glass. The crack is extremely difficult to see with the naked eye. There are no other defects or problems.

This is a fantastic rare bottle which we think all collectors and dealers will absolutely love. Go for it - you will not regret it.
