Feigenspan Beer Jug / 1890s / Newark, New Jersey Brewery: $470.00
You are offerding on a wonderful 1890s advertising item from the Christian Feigenspan Brewing Company, Newark, New Jersey. It is a ceramic jug with a nice deep teal color, a shiny glaze, and embossed lettering. Front side reads, \"FEIGENSPAN\'S / NEWARK, N.J. / PALE ALE / THE / RECOGNIZED RIVAL / OF THE IMPORTED\". Back side shows the triangle logo with \"CF\" inside, then the words, \"BOTTLED / AT THE / BREWERY ONLY\". This item was meant for advertising purposes only, i.e. it seems a bit too small for practical use. I would estimate it could hold perhaps one cup of liquid, maybe a cup-and-a-half. The item measures 5-1/8 inches tall, with a width of 4-1/8 inches across (from the elbow of handle to the tip of the pourer). There is no manufacturer\'s mark, nor any additional markings at all on the bottom or anywhere else.Age: The Feigenspan brewery made beer and ale in Newark, NJ both before and after Prohibition. But a quick search on Google for \"Feigenspan\" and \"Recognized rival of the imported\" reveals clearly that this slogan was used during the period 1895-1898, and apparently not afterward. Feigenspan was a very big brewery, and the slogan would surely show up in many sources on the web had they continued using it beyond this 1890s period. I would date this item very confidently to about 1895-1898.Condition: The embossing is very bold and distinct, and the contrast of the lettering is sharp and clear. Displays beautifully. There is a bit of very faint crazing, but it is fairly difficult to see, since it is not at all severe. On the back side, where the body begins to flare out, there are three pin-point-sized spots that are clearly manufacturing characteristics. The only real flaw that I can find is two tiny dings -- not more than 1 millimeter each -- on the back of the handle. I tried to zoom in as best as I could on this spot in picture #12. They are not much bigger than a pin-point. Other than that, the item is
