Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.little A fine early cylindrical Westerwald saltglazed stoneware mug or tankard of excellent quality, the front with a circular medallion encompassing a \'GR\' monogram with a stylized crown above; Germany, Westerwald region, circa 1715.  This has all the hallmarks of an early Westerwald tavern mug. The type of lettering used in the GR monogram is, in fact, interchangeable with that on the the early \'AR\' and \'WR\' mugs, and the quality of the sgraffito work on the body decoration is of a very high quality suggesting a date at the very beginning of the eighteenth century. This beautiful tavern mug or tankard is cylindrical with blue palmate and leaf sprays radiating either side of the GR medallion. The neck is slightly inverted and has blue bands around it. The handle has a typical \'rat-tail\' terminal and there is a small hole at the top of the handle for locating the \'peg\' of a pewter mount for a lid.  The mug is approximately 5 1/2 inches in height and 4 1/4 inches in diameter at the base. It is in excellent overall condition withthe exception of two hairlines running down from the rim and a star crack in the base with one line running half-way up the body.  This damage is consistentwith it being banged down sharply on a tavern table, maybe in the course of a heated argument all those years ago. There are no chips and there is no restoration.  This is a superb example of an early GR jug what would grace any collection of German stoneware / Westerwald or yourdealer\'s inventory.  Thank you for offerding and good luck! Insurance is included with shipping. Absolutely guaranteed authentic.
