A very fine rare early Northwest Coast Salish imbricated liddedwool basket dating from the late 1800\'s. This very special small basket is woven from split cedar bark and the striking complex imbricated designs from natural and dyed bear grasses and red cherry bark. The design featuresa complex stunning design of mountain peaks and butterflies, and a sun motif on the lid. The basket just glows with a rich fine aged patina. The basket measures 6 1/4\" in maximum diameter and stands 6\" tall and is in excellent condition for its age with norepairs or significant damages, very minor imbrication loss as expected with great age andjust a great patina from careful handling and use. This beautiful basket was used to store the wool used to make the famed Salish baskets.The wool gathered from a special breed of dog , that became extinct in the early 1900\'s, was fed through the small hole then wrapped onto spindle whorl . This beautiful museum quality basket is a pleasure to hold and look at it, it\'ll make a fine addition to the very best collections.
