Offered for your consideration is a classic Puma "White Hunter" hunting knife. Puma's knives are some of the most sought after German production knives made and are of the finest Solingen, Germany quality. They offer full measures of the fine, old-world German quality and craftsmanship that built both the Solingen and Puma names. The White Hunter has always been one of their most popular models, and in my opinion, it's one of the most versatile designs ever made. In fact, to many experienced hunters and hard-core outdoorsman the White Hunter is the hunting knife by which all others are compared. This knife will just about do it all and is really a combination hunting, survival, and camp knife. It will cut, saw, chop, and pound and the model is certainly one of the timeless classics. The White Hunter has long been the backbone of Puma's line and was made in several variations over the years, with the stag-handled versions being the most popular. The White Hunter was one of the original models that Gutmann Cutlery Co. began importing to the U.S. back in the mid 1950's. This example was one of the knives made for Abercrombie & Fitch, likely before 1964 as it does not have a date code.
The knife has seen moderate use and remains very solid with no problems. The knife has not been buffed or polished and remains original.
The knife was beautifully made but, hey...it's a Puma. And for those who've owned or handled classic Puma knives previously, that's probably all that really needs to be said. The design has remained basically unchanged for well over half a century now and that really says it all as well. Puma got it right the first time. The thick blade was precisely ground from carbon steel. It's free of any significant corrosion or pitting with just someof the usual small spots of fine surface peppering as shown. Ithas a unique profile and grind which offers excellent versatility. The knife has a very distinctive balance and feel, as this model is just as at home chopping or pounding as it is in standard cutting applications. The flat area on the upper blade behind the tip was initially designed for tapping or pounding (tent stakes) applications, although this example has not been used for such and it's free of marring or damage. The blade is extra thick in this area to give the knife a weight-forward attitude. The spine features a 3-1/2" sharpened section designed for chopping applications, although the previous owner ground the edge flat for some reason. It was very lightly and cleanly done, so it basically just needs re-sharpened with the appropriate bevel for chopping duties. Simply turn the knife over and it's very well-suited for light chopping duties. The primary edge is slightly recurved and features a 1-1/2" section of needle-sharp serrations near the guard. The serrated edge is free of any broken teeth, dings, or damage and remains original. The blade has been only very lightly honed and remains very close to full. It's free of any grinder marks or harsh sharpening abrasions with just some fine, hairline abrasions from normal use. The spine also features a deeply milled thumb recess that's perfectly positioned. The guard wascrafted fromcast aluminum and remains rock-solid. It's free of any marring or damage with just a couple scattered, very light dings as shown. The stag handle is simply gorgeous! The thick scales are very rich in both color and texture. The stag is beautifully aged and it's completely free of any bleaching, sun fade, or water exposure dryness. The scaleswere tightly pinned with Puma's distinctive large, bi-metallicrivets. The stag is completely free of any cracks, chips, hairlines,or damage. The handle was also fitted with an upper mid-handle brass-lined lanyard tube that also functions with Puma's unique sheath handle retaining system.
The blade is 6" and the knife measures 10-5/8" in overall length.
The sheath is notthe original, although it is aWhite Hunter sheath. It's just a more recent version that still features Puma's classic design. It's in excellent condition with just abit of light storage wear and some markings a previous owner put on the reverse with an ink pen. Puma's sheaths are well-known for their exceptional quality and outstanding functionality. Their older style sheaths (like this one) are certainly among the finest factory sheaths you'll see. This example features Puma's classic through-handle retaining lanyard for extra security. It also features a generous section of sturdy braided nylonlashing cord through the bottom grommet.
A very solid example of this classic knife from one of the world's finest makers!!
