Here is a 9” carnival glass bowl in the Four Flower Variant pattern.
This one just pops – I promise. The pictures are very accurate.
It’s beautiful what more can be said?
This pattern is very much like Dugans Four Flower pattern but it has four little extra buds placed in between the leaves and that is really the only difference. The amazing thing about it is that it is not a Dugan piece of work. This one is still a bit of a mystery as to its manufacturer but folks are pretty sure that it is European.
It is a low ruffled bowl with a purple base. The iridescence is out of this world and soaked with electric blue color.
You have to see this top shelf item for yourself to fully grasp how beautiful it truly is.
Please note:
European carnival glass is made and held during the manufacturing process a little differently. On many of them the pontil is ground down to erase the area where the tool separated from the glass during cooling. Instead of a collar or marie that is raised these are ground to where they are pretty much even with the bottom of the bowl.
Please take a close look at pic 11 and zoom in on it. You can see where the glassmaker got a little to carried away with his grinding and ended missing a couple of spots altogether and chipping some of the inside of the pontil. Only the inside. This is called a “hard or rough pontil”. In this case it is most likely that the rod and glass were separated “after” cooling. The separation point resembles broken glass. In extreme cases it can be sharp to the touch.
This one is not extreme. It is still ground nice and flat but it appears he quit while he was ahead and so no damage was caused to the bowl.
I’m not listing this as damage because it happened during the manufacturing process. This is a “makers miss” But I want you to be aware that it is there and to understand exactly what it is. Please take a close look before offerding so you can see what I’m talking about. I have more pictures of the bottom if you would like to see them. Just let me know.
