A very old Louis Gandolfi 4x5 camera.
This is ahand made camera, made in person by Louis Gandolfi.This camera was crafted in the original London workshop.(Please note the L.Gandolfi stamp) This is pre \"sons\" era
What proceeds is official Gandolfi the help of his sons running the business and especially the matching craftsmanship achieved by his son Thomas, Louis began to accept commissions to make custom-built Gandolfi cameras. Among the first customers was the famous photographer Herbert Ponting, who accompanied Captain Scott on his fatal Antarctic expedition, and for the Earl of Carnarvon for the Tutankhamun expedition. Louis constructed some of the earliest \"Big Bertha\" telephoto cameras, that captured cricket matches, horse races and earliest British atomic explosion.
In 1932 with the comfort of knowing that his three sons were running the business, Louis Gandoli died at the age of 68. With his passing, the business name was changed to Gandolfi & Sons and the business continued to the above in mind, it is my belief that this camera dates from before 1932. I do not know for sure and you are welcome to seek advice. However, I know for certain that all cameras from Gandolfi had a waiting list of at least 3 years. There never were any \"off the shelf\" Gandolfi cameras. Each camera is unique, made by hand and hardly, if ever sold. If my information is correct a similar aged Gandolfi sold 4 years ago for just over £6500 pounds. This is a rare opportunity. I will not be attempting to restore this camera nor polish it in any way. From careful inspection, I can see that the bellows would need to be patched or replaced and the brass parts polished and handle repair if you wanted to put it into use. \"Birmingham Bellows Company\" are able to make a brand new set without issue. However, due to the extreme rarity of this particular camera, I would suggest you simply display it or store as a very viable and attractive investment.
You will find 3 very nice videos on youtube regarding the Gandolfi cameras. This camera is advertised elsewhere so please get in touch if you feel you will miss the sale end to avoid disappointment. A collection is fine or will post via a tracked and signed service international or within UK.
