Here we offer a genuine George III period Claude glass or dark mirror, used by artists and tourists in Georgian times when painting. The circular slightly convex black mirror is contained within the original textured black sharkskin or shagreen covered case with three hook and eye closures (one damaged) and the original suspension loop, and lined internally with green velvet.
The case appears to be made of a compressed cardboard type composition and has, over the years, warped somewhat to the lid (the \'smile\' is approx 1.5cms max) which means you cannot quite align the base and cover for closure. This is exactly as we sourced the glass, no attempt has been made to correct the warp, but presumably, in the correct hands, and because of the composition this could be attended to.
Condition is otherwise very good, with little wear to the shagreen and the original hinge still tight, 12.5 cms 5\" diameter
