Gibson A Mandolin Oval Hole \"Orville\" Label 1908 For Sale

For your consideration: a 1908 Orville Gibson mandolin that\'s had some love but could use some more. A previous owner refinished this, and while they did a decent job of it, the authentic vintage patina is no longer there. But it is in good shape and fundamentally a very good instrument; with the addition of a new bridge, tailpiece and strings, it looks like it will play well and sound lovely. This sports the original \"Orville\" label including the Gibson lyre mandolin with a picture of Orville himself in the middle of it, numbered 8745. it featuresa headstock inlay and an intact original rosette. The frets have no wear and were quite possibly replaced during the restoration work. The neck is straight, flat, and at a good angle. Someone at some point installed a pickup and in certain light (see pictures) one can see where the holes from three knobs were filled as well as some repaired cracks. The back of the body along with the neck have a gloss finish while the sides and top are satin. Tuners are in good shape and may be original. Comes with a junque vintage chipboard case, which may be the original; the case is torn away from one of the hinges (see picture). We suspect that, even though this now has a black top, it was probably not originally a \"blackface\" model. With the double rosette, it is a quite possibly a \"4\" model.

With a little conscientious effort, this mandolin could be made into a real \'keeper\'.
