Good Filament 1915 Spherical Audion w/Oak Control Box * Alan Douglas Collection For Sale

I\'ve got another outstanding assortment of mechanical, technological and musical antiques coming your way this week, so make sure to check out my other listings after you look at this one.Here\'s a beautiful, century-old spherical Audion with a good filament, a perfectly formed glass envelope, an undamaged evacuation tip, and both of its original wire leads still intact. The Audion is mounted in an equally beautiful solid oak control box. The tube and control box come from the estate of renown radio historian and collector Alan Scott Douglas, the author of Radio Manufacturers of the 1920\'s, the 3-volume \"bible\" of early radio collecting.The Audion is original, ca. 1915 -17. The remnants of the tag are protruding from the brass base, but I don\'t know if it\'s deForest, McCandless or a bootleg (the latter were manufactured illegally to skirt deForest\'s licensing fees). Sheathing on the leads is original, and it\'s rubber. Faded and cracked but still largely intact. The control box is a replica modeled after an Arnold control box that was sold to radio experimenters in the early teens. Box is brilliantly constructed, and as you can see in the pictures, it could pass as an Arnold box any day of the week. As noted above, the Audion has a good filament. The brass base is still firmly attached to the glass.Measures approximately 13\" x 7\" x 6\". Shipping weight approximately 8 lb.That\'s about it. I will of course remove the spherical Audion from the control box prior to shipping and pack both pieces carefully and properly.
