Grover & Baker #22 Early American Antique sewing machine, treadle mahogany cabnet:
$2500.00

Grover & Bakermodel#22 Silver plated,Elastic stitch two thread sewing machine, mahogany cabinet, cast iron treadle, stand

“The Grover & Baker (G&B) Sewing machines Company “ of BostonMA was one of the original members of “Sewing Machine Combination” formed by G&B‘s President Orlando Potter in 1856.

Those fourcompanies: Grover & Baker,Wheeler & Wilson, I.M.Singer &Elias Howe has formed the first in US history Patent poolIn order to prevent themselves fromlitigationand , of course, to control the sewing machine market. They have contributed into the that pool the best innovative ideas they had .

This G&B machine Model 22 was the first machine ever to be able to draw bottom thread directly from the spool instead of bobbin and together with the upper thread to form very unique double knotted two thread chain stitch that was patented by W.Grover on May 6 1849. That particular stitch has been superior to any other seams because of it\'sstrengthand elasticity . According to the world\'s renown antique sewing machine expert\'s opinions - the higher value generally associated with even a relatively common G&B machines is due to their uniqueunusual appearance andhistorical significance.

The sewing machinebeing offered for sale today is The Famous Silver plated Model # 22, Serial # 242372. The sliding plates and body of the machine head also carry the numerical marks - # 90233. The earlier versions of these machines has been made starting in 1855 and produced till middle 1860 .The mechanism featured on this particular machine has been patented ( US Patent # 21670) by W.Grover on October 5 1858. What is amazing that the same thread formation system is still being utilizedon some modernoverclockmachines. These machines has been hand made with great precision . Even today ,155 years later, all parts in the machine’s moving mechanisms themselves as the new ones . I have purchased two G&Bmachines 38 years ago inBuffaloNYat the sale that has been held after The Snow Blizzard of 1977 at theSeneca streetbuilding of formerDomestic Sewing Machine Company . This famous company has been making parts ,silver plate them and then completely assembled machines for Grover&Baker Co. In 1875 The Domestic SMC has purchased G & B SMC and shortly after that has stop production of all G & B models. The Industrial Revolution at it\'s peak could not justify production of hand made finely crafted and therefore very expensive sewing machines . At that time ( too) nobody really cared how beautiful and gracefully curved like a swans those G & B machines were - the production cost and sale price has beenthe deciding factor . Unfortunately, now more than before , in our society constant pursue of lower cost , most of us have the tendency to overlook or simply brush off such aspects as quality and aesthetics . So, let the truly exquisite appearance of this machine to serve to us as a reminder of that unfortunately begone era.

Please look at all these pictures attached . For being over 155 years old this machine is absolutely beautiful . The original sterling silver plating is still uniformly distributed on the 2 graceful arches of the machine. The front sliding plates has been professionally re-plated. Of course, there are some chips, paint loss , discoloration - after all it is 155 years old machine... The machine has been completely taken apart , cleaned, adjusted and now turns and function correctly and freely. The gold painted motifs on the wrought iron stand and treadle did not survived and could not be revealed at the first glance . Those original gold paint motifs has retained only as the shadow and I have made the attempt to highlight those hardly visible shadow in order to bring it as close as possible to the original state. The stationary and moving parts of the treadle and the machine are all in the perfect mechanical condition. Machine is ready to sew The curved needle is also coming with this machine . The mahogany table, cabinet, drawer and top cover - all has been restored to the original specifications. The wood has been carefully hand cleaned, hydrated multiple times with linseed oil and has been sealed to prevent any further moisture penetration and oxidation. The Unique patented lock mechanism has been taken apart , cleaned, polished, oiled and it is functions correctly too and locks with the key provided. The iron legs, very sophisticated ornamental treadle mechanism has been stripped of all nasty rust and whale oil grime build up and has been restored to the original splendor.

To make it short - The statementin the Harper\'s Monthly Magazine on August 1861 \"...does not fail to excite your admiration for the beauty and uniformity... \" is surely holds the truth even more now than 154 years ago.

We all do know very well that the opportunity to purchase truly unique historicalAmerican Heritage collectors piece like this onedoes not presentitself often. During the summerI was very fortunate to have the opportunity to acquire another two G&B # 22 sewing machine in the Parlor cabinets with the treadle mechanism and pedal . Only then, after some considerations I have decided to part myself with this beauty and offer this complete unit for sale .

Please note:

I can offer the number of options (4) to package this machine . It would depends on the new destination location.

1. Completely take it apart : remove the machine from the table, treadle wheel and iron stand from the cabinet ( 4 screws) and to pack it together with cover in one carton with a lot of impact absorption media . In the similar cases of shipping the antique treadle machines of such High status I usually use High Density foam boards, curve the opening in them to fit disassembled parts of the treadle and cabinet into 3 large cartons. Please note that ever popular bubble wrap is NOT effective protection at all from the forces of impact being transferred to the fragile cast iron parts .To take apart very heavy and unique mechanism of treadle is absolutelynecessaryin order to provide adequateprotection not only from mention above impacts but also from effect of very rapid movement within the carton with parts . Only HD closed cell foam can absorb and dissipate the forces and guarantee the safety of content.I have created the pictorial assembly instruction with step-by-step description of assembly process . I have converted it into PDF format and it would be forwarded to the buyer of this machine .The table is not big -29x17x4\'\'.

The folded treadle is 29 x14 x14\",cover - 18x14x10, head is relatively small and will fit with proper impact absorbing insulation into separate carton of 18x12x8. The issue here is not the size but weight :The treadle base and huge wheel are extremely heavy, so the total weight withadequatepackaging could be over 100 lbs so it would require delivery to the commercial address with the loading dock .

2. To do the same process as above but to pack into 3 cartons separately and ship it at once in order to have 3 packages of 60 , 40, 30 LBS for each package and to be able to use the domestic address for delivery . The price for shipping of 3 separate packages would actually be less than in the option # 1 or # 3 .

3.To remove machine head , bonnet top , turn the machine upside-down , secure it on the wood palate and to build the crate around it and ship it through Fed-EX freight to deliver to the commercial address with loading dock .This would be the most expensive way of shipping but to my opinion not necessarily the safest . You know very well that any lateral impact could do the damage to the cast iron even if the wood wall would be build on the 4 sides , especially considering that the center or gravity would be high. Honestly - is is not the safest option.

4. Or if the destination address would be within the states with the common borders with Missouri , I could remove the machine head , lay the table with wheel and frame on the back, slide it into my Subaru Forester, support all iron parts securely , wrap it up into soft blankets to prevent scratches to the beautiful wood table and cover and to drive to the designated place to meet the buyer and help to re-load cargo into the other adequate vehicle . This option most likely would be the best possible option from the prospective of safe delivery ( and in some cases for the shipping cost purposes too) . All what I want for that service is the money for gas.

Just within last year I have carefully packed and shipped at least 6 similarly unique Early American antique sewing machines with the treadle and cast iron stands to the very far away countries -they all camethrough these long and treacherousjourneyswithout any damage . G-d foroffer, butin a worse case scenario nobody want to go through with alitigationprocess with a freight companies . Even when one purchase adequate insurance ( I do ) and finally would have money for the damaged item - a seller would not have the item in the same condition and a buyers would not receive an item they want .

YOU WILL RECEIVE:

- 1 Mahogany cabinet with drawer cover

ABOUT ME

I am recently retired textile engineer and sewing machines have always been a part of my job. My background in mechanical engineering combined with some nostalgia, passion and plenty of time on my hands has made the great implication on my current activities – Antique and vintage sewing machine restoration. Over the years I have bought, repaired, serviced and refurbished dozens of machines just for myself and for friends , but now when I am running out of space to store them in accordance with their status, I have decided to begin to offer to you these marvels of old engineering at reasonable price .

MY PROCESS

In order to retain the authenticity of original time-honored design, fine details which once embellished the antique sewing machines and my own clear conscience, I am trying to avoid the metal parts refinishing – no stripping to remove the original finish, no rust preventative primer. But if the condition of the machine is being extremely neglected I have to do that ,but my intention is to retain as much as possible of the original decorations.

Here is a brief description of my process:

If required, I am soaking all moving parts in WD-40 to get rid of that stubborn solidified whale oil, clean surface with Murphy’s oil soap, high speed polish chrome plated parts and apply a thin coat of a mixture of Boiled linseed oil & turpentine on the originally painted parts and re-assemble machine. The gear driven machines are being properly cleaned, greased and oiled, the timing is being checked , bobbin case or shuttle are being taken apart, cleaned and oiled for smooth thread draw, stitch adjusted to be equal on both sides. If appropriate for that particular model/class, machine is being tested to sew at slow and fast speeds and in reverse on numerous layers of denim to assure it is sewing with ease. For machines with motor /light /foot pedal control the following steps are being taken to assure that machine is electrically safe to operate: the motor, pedal, light wires, are inspected for electrical safety and replaced (if necessary) from the coils to the connector. The foot pedals are being cleaned and adjusted for smooth speed control. The machines I offer for sale are electrically safe and fully guaranteed to sew very well.

If it would be a treadle or cabinet sewing machine , I will double-box machine’s head separately .
