History of Ice Boxes & Refrigerators ~ Catalogs on DVD

An Icebox was the common appliance for providing refrigeration in the home before safe refrigerants made compact mechanical refrigerators feasible. Commonly iceboxes were made of wood, most probably for ease of construction, insulation, and aesthetics, many were handsome pieces of furniture as can be seen in these early catalogs.Iceboxes typically had hollow walls which were lined with tin or zinc and packed with various insulating materials such as cork, sawdust, straw or seaweed. A large block of ice was held in a tray or compartment near the top of the box. Cold air circulated down and around storage compartments in the lower section. Some finer models had spigots for draining ice water from a catch pan or holding tank. In cheaper models a drip pan was placed under the box and had to be emptied at least daily. From a small upstart company, by 1892, Alaska Refrigerator shipped 4000 iceboxes, filling 42 large train cars. Over the next 20 years the company would grew to, two large factories, four warehouses, etc. The line grew to over 200 styles and sizes of iceboxes. One of the distinguishing features in its iceboxes was the use of cork for insulation, rather than charcoal or sawdust. By the 1920\'s electric refrigerators started to enter the market and the old-fashioned ice boxes began going out of style, as can be shown in the 68 page Alaska catalog of 1928.
