Apparently when this production run of Toshiba recorders were made they didn't secure the heat sinks over some of the components properly as when I got it, the unit looked like bran new never used but i couldn't get any audio from it. Upon disassembling the unit i found that one of the heat sinks were loose and off the component it was supposed to be cooling, and this had of have been from the factory as the unit did not show any signs of being dropped or damage in any way it looked like new from inside out. But the cost of repair for the older unit exceeds the purchase of a new unit so I recycled it. Here are a couple of photos showing what I found when i disassembled the unit

I bought this HDDVD player because in addition to my Blu-ray collection I have many HD DVD's that I want to keep. I previously had only the XBOX add on HDDVD player and bought this one for use in another room. If you're someone like me who already has an HDDVD collection or even want to continue to buy them on eBay or elsewhere ( you can get them MUCH cheaper than their Blu-ray version equivalents) then this is a fine player. This player hooks up easily, has an HDMI output and plays in 1080P where other players may only play in 1080I max (so do your research). Also you can still buy one used or new at a VERY reasonable price. Picture quality is great also upconverts standard DVD's and has an easy to use remote. There's nothing not to like if you want an HDDVD player that can utilize the highest resolution possible (remember this does not play Blu-ray). I recommend it highly.Read full review
Well this is my first hd dvd player. I would like to say that the detail is amazing and crystal clear. The only thing i dislike about the hd dvd player is the load time, but the wait is well worth it. I decided to purchase this one cause it seemed to be the best price for the money. I would recommend this player to anyone who wants great picture and sound.
It wasn't until after I received this player that I found out about a common problem with this model- it won't output ANY sound at all from HD-DVDs, and will only output Dolby Digital and DTS from standard DVDs- if you have a standard DVD with a PCM audio track, it won't output that either. Mine was tested on 2 different receivers, and research found others with this model had the same problem but nobody knows what causes it. Firmware upgrades didn't help. At least I can use the drive from this in my A2 if that ever dies- though that player can't output 1080P as this one can, it's still better than having no sound!
The player does exactly what I needed it to do. Serve as my primary player of HD-DVD's, while my HD-XA2 serves as my DVD upconverter. Build quality is simple and the unit looks nice next to my Blu player. Otherwise, the menu setup is the standard Toshiba HD-DVD variety, and if you are even considering buying this item, you probably don't need another explanation of the player's finer points. The only letdown for this unit is the lack of bitstreaming, but for the price I paid? No biggie.
