Although the start up process is slow, this is a great performing player and will satisfy even the most critical Home Theater buffs. My only complaint is the slow start up. But as with all HD DVD players it is the nature of the beast. From top to bottom this Next Gen. Player is all class with its all aluminum body, "No cheap plastics here". Weighing in at almost 18 pounds mostly because of the high end components used inside this player, it will withstand even the most abusive Bass your sub can put out and never miss a beat. The remote is also a class act with solid aluminum construction and buttons, while offering a full back light display. The ability to up convert your current DVD collection is an outstanding feature. Compared to other stand alone Up convert players this is in a league of its own, with 1080p output and stunning audio that you never knew was available on your current media you will enjoy your whole collection in a new light. With its ability to update it self via LAN port you will surly be on the latest cutting edge of this players abilities as well as the added features that many of the HD DVD's offer through its network connection. Having had almost every type of player out there I am most satisfied with the operation and output that the Toshiba HD-XA2 offers. My reason for buying the HD-XA2 was because of the price coming down from its original retail pricing and being able to step into a high end Next Gen. player that will satisfy my taste for the best. I hope that this has helped you with your decision.Read full review
I bought this used but in excellent condition. It upconverts regular dvds to "almost" rival the picture quality of the HD dvds. And needless to say, the Hd Dvd picture quality was awesome on the XA2 player. As one of my friends commented on charlie and the chocolate factory hd dvd movie, " the picture quality was so sharp it looked almost fake (??). " I HAD one issue with the XA2 player, it over heats quite readily. At one point it was shutting off every 5 minutes in the movie. I took it apart, thinking it was a faulty fan. But after cleaning and testing it out, it wasnt the fan. I decided that it was an airflow problem. After i pieced it back, i placed the AX2 3 inches off the shelf and the problem NEVER appeared again. Thank goodness Toshiba had the sensibility to place a heat sensor that cuts out when it starts to overheat. Otherwise this machine would have been vaporized. Other than this one issue, the machine is very good with a remote that is easy to use. Just remember to use HDMI 1.3 cables to connect to your 1080p hdtv. The HD-XA2 takes home theatre experience to a whole different level.Read full review
First of all, I try to keep up with the latest technology. My Toshiba HD-XA2 in my opinion is the best of the best. The cream of the crop. The picture quality is outstanding. It has plenty of features, and it does a great job with standard dvd's as well.I have a blu-ray player as well, which is top of the line as far as blu-ray is concerned. But it does not hold a candle to my HD-XA2.As long as I have HD-DVD movies, and can still buy them.I will be enjoying my Toshiba HD-XA2 for a very long time. The fact that I was able to get it one ebay was a plus.My experience with ebay was very pleasent and worry free. The fact that I bought the best HD player on a great web site was a definate plus.I heard that somebody might be trying to bring HD-DVD technology back,I sure hope so.
I have been involved with Pro and Consumer Electronics for the better part of 45 years. Though coming late to the Hi Def Wars, Toshiba put its best foot forward when they brought the XA2 to market. It is a superlative machine, still one of the best for regular DVDs. If you couple that fact with the extraordinary discounts on new and used HD DVDs (even less than regular DVDs) and the prices they are giving the XA2 away for, this amounts to a no-brainer. Toshiba builds a high-quality product that should provide years of enjoyment and this was their flagship product. The firmware upgrades are the real deal as well. This machine gives you outstanding performance (in both sound and video) at budget prices. My Irish grandmother used to say,"A word to the wise is sufficient."...word.
Just simply awesome. I have a Sony blue ray which is a great player, but after watching and listening to the Xa2, ther is no dvd player as of this moment with firmware update that can beat it. Hd picture quality is above avearge over the other hd players, but what sets it apart from the other competitors is its dvd upscaler. It feauters the Silicon Optix Reon scaler that is just super. The audio sounds terrific especially with any new release dvd, not just hd dvd. even if it lost the war with blue ray, it will not be outdated for a long long tme, and most but not least, it will make your old dvds and home made dvds look awesome. A must have, and have to see it and hear it to believe it.
