This is a 2 pack of movies from many years ago. Both are a bit dated, but are an interesting contrast. First up is "The Black Brigade". It's a 70s TV movie about a group of African American soldiers during WW2. Due to prejudicial policies of our govt. back then, most black soldiers were limited to such mundane duties as ditch, latrine & grave digging. This is the story about such a unit. A hard nosed, & not just a little racist, white captain is given the assignment to take & hold a damn in Germany until reinforcements arrive. He is shocked to find that the unit assigned him is made up of black soldiers, who he has nothing but contempt for, especially their black lieutenant. For some reason, despite such an important assignment, he only takes 7 men. The rest of the film deals with their journey to the damn & the captain's slow realization that these men are capable soldiers when given the chance. There is plenty of racial innuendo on both white & black sides, but in the end, the captain is won over by his hard fighting troops. Stephen Boyd (Best known as Charleton Heston's foil Massala in "Ben Hur") plays Captain Carter & veteran TV actor Robert Hooks is Lt Wallace. More notable stars include Richard Pryor, Billy Dee Williams & former LA Ram defensive tackle Rosie Grier along with Susan Oliver & Moses Gunn. Williams' character is the direct predecessor of Denzel Washington's character in "Glory." While Pryor offers some humor as the cowardly Pvt Crunk who for some odd reason wears a beret through out. This is certainly NOT Black cinema at it's best, but it is an intriguing early look at race relations in the military that transfer to real life & how "judging a book by it's cover" is never a good idea when dealing with people!Read full review
