My Oppo DVD Player does a good job of upconverting to 1080i from standard DVD's. It does have a few "imperfections," however. It only upconverts to the DVI output, not to component out. The buttons don't always work the first time. And the "problem" that causes some distress: it doesn't produce a picture that completely fills the available screen width..it just misses on the right side by enough to be noticeable. Overall, the picture quality is a saving grace from the DVI output despite not quite filling the screen. It is superb otherwise! On a 21" wide-screen it is difficult to tell the difference from the output of a full 1080i off-air digital converter. I bought it because I wanted the picture quality and some of the more interesting features, (like sound volume control at the player). I think this player was a really good value for what I paid..it just has a few quirks that I could live without.Read full review
This thing has a beautiful playback, I'm going through my old movies 'cause the picture looks so good. I am very satisfied. Another reviewer at Amazon mentioned that the plastic tray looked like it could easily break, I disagree, the plastic is very flexible, other players have hard plastic trays, not the Oppo. I saw somewhere on line a guy that bent his down to the shelf level without breaking! The reason it doesn't have an Excellent rating: 1. The disk tray is wider than the DVD's and it doesn't extend all the way out. In order to remove the DVD you must stick your finger in the disk's hole and tilt it up and slide it toward you. 2. To save your place in the movie you have to eject the disk, you can't pause and turn it off or just turn it off. 3. It takes longer for the disk to load than my old Sony. I can live with the drawbacks, awesome picture!Read full review
Price - One might actually think that $200 is a lot for a DVD player. My wife would fall into the category of those people. She asked me why can't I just get another $30 dollar Cyberhome. She stopped complaining though after I hooked it up to the TV and showed her how dramatic the difference was in picture quality. I also told her if she doesn't shut up, I'll get a $2,500 Denon :-) . Picture Quality - I've tried 3 different DVD players (Sampo DVE612, Cyberhome DVD500, and Philips DVP642) first using various connections to determine which one works the best, and then compared it to Oppo. Here are the results of my test: Sampo (no progressive scan output) worked best using S-Video connection. Cyberhome (with progressive scan) had the best picture quality using component connection with Progressive Scan turned off. Philips (with progressive scan) had the best result when using the same component connection, but with Progressive Scan turned on. Then, I held my breath and connected the newly acquired Oppo to my TV using the DVI connection. I put my daughter's favorite Lion King DVD in it, and pressed the Play button. I thought my eyes are going to pop out. The difference was astonishing. It's like watching the same movie in a regular movie theater and then in IMAX with 3-D experience. Simply amazing. Versatility - It handles everything I through at it. Burned DVD's, MP3's, JPEG's, DIVX, VCD's, etc. I haven't had a simple hiccup yet. It didn't come "region free" out of the box though, as other users mentioned in their reviews. But all you have to do is to apply a simple remote control hack. It's funny, but Oppo support page itself actually mentions how to access the hidden menu. They tell you that for the purposes of checking the firmware version, but you can also use it to your advantage. Here is the procedure: Press "Setup" button on your remote control. Then enter "9 2 1 0" using the remote. The menu pops up and all you have to do is enter "0" for "region free" playback. I played several different PAL DVD's from different regions and it handled them very well. Also, it's probably a good idea to switch the TV type to "Auto" in the setup menu. That way it recognizes the format automatically, and uses the correct output. Features - If you are the owner of HDTV LCD or Plasma with DVI and/or HDMI inputs, then I would highly recommend you take advantage of it and purchase this DVD player. There is not a lot of DVD players on the market these days that have DVI capabilities. There is even less that offer Faroudja chipset that makes the picture quality so exceptional. As far as I know Denon is pretty much the only one. Denon has several different models with DVI output, ranging from $700 to $3,500. But not one has as many features as Oppo does. And why would you want to spend 10 times more money on something that will probably be obsolete in a couple of years? Plus the customer service is superb nothing is too much trouble even stupid questions get easily understood answers, and they wont keep your unit for months if in fact you ever get a problem.Read full review
How many of you know of a dvd player that can play all regions? This one can. Press setup on remote to access setup page, next enter 9210 on the remote, a hidden menu will appear, select region 0 which will allow you all region access, then press setup again to exit. I bought pirates of the carribbean 2 which was a region 2 movie. No one bid on it since it is in region 2 & got it for 5 bucks. I tried the movie in my dvd player & it worked perfect. I tried the movie in another dvd player & the player didn't recognize that there was a disc in it. There are so many other nice features, to list just a few would be the adjustable output resolution,(only can be used through the hdmi connection) select 480p, 540p, 720p, or 1080i & thats just the NTSC formats which most american tv's accept. I use the 1080i which my sony flat screen tv has that format & the picture is just unbelievably good. Connect you dvd player to you receiver using the optical connection & sound is crisp & clear through your entertainment center. Bass tones, midrange & tweeter sounds are very easily distinguish. Spend a hour & read the user manual once you bought this dvd player. You will need & want to understand all of its features. I did however have problem with my dvd player only after owning it for a couple of weeks. The dvd player stopped sending a signal through the hdmi connection. It still would send a picture through the component video & s-video but not through the hdmi. I called OPPO, they sent me a shipping label, so I could send it in for service. Two weeks latter they sent me a brand new one. Not only is their dvd player awesome but so is their service. Once the blue-ray & hd battle is done, I will most certainly buy the one that wins the battle but for now this OPPO dvd player I think is the best out there.Read full review
Greetings...after doing considerable research on DVD players..I decided to buy the OPPO 971H. reasons: simple to use..not over loaded with whistles and bells I wouldn't use, and the picture quality is SUPER. It does an excellent job on photo CDs from my puter.. I am usuing it with a Samsung DLP 50" TV..The HighDef is just fantastic..PLEASE check out this player before you buy a more spendy player..note: this player beat a 3500$ Denon in benchmark testing. respectfully fubaman
