Fence-sitters of the format war, sit no longer! Samsung's BD-UP5000 Duo Player is the best way to conveniently enjoy all formats. Just be sure you know about its quirks before you buy. First off, the picture quality is outstanding. HD-DVD and Blu-ray come through in dazzling 1080p as you'd expect. The big surprise comes when you play an older SD DVD; the quality is dramatically improved by the HQV Reon, which is one of the best available upconverting chips. The 24Hz video output makes a subtle improvement when used with a compatible display. Unfortunately, a few HD-DVD titles refuse to output 24Hz with this player. This player's biggest drawback is HD audio support. First, let me say that if your audio output is SPDIF (toslink optical or digital coax) you won't be missing anything yet; multichannel Dolby Digital and DTS work just fine. However, if you have an HDMI-capable receiver, you'll be disappointed to discover that the BD-UP5000 neither decodes nor bitstreams any of the HD audio formats except PCM. Rumor has it this will fixed with a firmware update in June 2008, but there's no guarantee of that. In summation, this is an excellent player that'll handle any format you throw at it, and make them look beautiful; just don't expect advanced audio formats yet.Read full review
this is my review about about the BD-5000. I also went & got the LG BH200..but I digress..LOL..ok..here are the specs..& then?? I've give my opinion.. This is a very good player. even though it doesn't go past 1080p (you can also go to 1080p/24fps with the newer players)..it gives you a decent picture & good audio ONCE you've put in the firmware update..(otherwise you're stuck with BASIC DD (Dolby Digital)..there's no DVI..(not that anyone uses it anymore)..it has the Component plugs (1080i thru RCA jacks)..& the regular Composite..(a/v Cables)..so if you just want to enjoy your HD-DVDs again..then this will really fit the bill..& you can watch your Blurays..ALERT??!! if you're using newer Blurays..then you'll need to go to the Samsung site..& d/l the latest firmware update..(which as of now is version 1.7 (2013)..now you can watch your newer Blurays & DVDs w/o any interruptions..NOW MY OPINION!!?? this player has seen its last days..if you're going to get the biggest bang for your HD-DVD..you need to get a Toshiba HD-A30 or the HD-A35 (the most recent of the 2)..it gives you the 1080p/24 plus 7.1 Audio when you put in the 4.0 firmware update..i have BOTH Toshiba Players & the hybrid players..if you're going Bluray..then just get a recent/decent one for 100-200 bucks..& if you want (again) an HD-DVD player..get the Toshibas..i have the Samsung TV's (the first joints) & though the Samsung hybrid player IS good..the Toshiba dwarfs it 5 fold..LOL.. summary..if ALL that you want to do is get another 4-5 years of enjoying your HD-DVDs & your Blurays..then you can get this player..BUT!!?? if you want the MOST out of your movies..MOVE ON FROM THIS PLAYER!!..LOL..ok..i'm done..thank you all for reading..Peace..& God bless you & yours.. The Samsung BD-UP5000 is without a doubt the best combo player on the market. High-def disc picture reproduction is incredible and the player's standard-def DVD upconverting is as good as I've seen. HD DVD picture reproduction is a definite step up from my XBOX 360 add-on (even when displaying at 1080p over the 360's VGA cables). On the downside, you can't adjust picture settings through the player's menu without stopping playback, making image comparison between settings difficult. In addition, updating the player's firmware took about 45 minutes over cable modem, also frustrating. Overall however, the player is great--I'm very happy with my purchase. Soon you'll be able to buy HD-DVDs at rock bottom prices, so I'd still recommend this player despite the fact that the format war is over.
Back in 2007 during the format wars of HD DVD vs Blu Ray, Samsung introduced this dual format player at a price of $1,000. During this time period most all reviews of this machine were excellent, but I felt the price was a little high. So, to find this player on ebay all these years later was a surprise. I was a little afraid because of recent user reviews saying it would not play current blu rays, cdrs, dvdrs, and various other problems. I believe most of these problems are players that have not been updated with latest firmware (version 1.7 available at Samsung support). After performing this firmware update I have been able to play all my older and newer blu rays, HD DVD, CDs, CDrs, DVDs, DVDrs. Also the upconversion quality of standard DVDs is near the quality of Blu Ray or HD DVD. I realize this certainly isnt the latest greatest technology, but it was fun to find an older Blu Ray/HD DVD player at a reasonable price. I couldn't be happier!Read full review

This is the Samsung BD-UP5000. I bought this player for the sole reason to watch HD-DVD's. I use a region free Sony BD player to watch Blu-ray. I bought this player used with accompanying HD-DVD's. They play awesome, very nice HD format here that probably should have been given a chance. It was easy to hook up, easy and functional remote, and all the menu's on board are easy to figure out. Many other HD-DVD players offered here can only do up to 1080i, so this model far exceeded the typical HD-DVD players offered. Full 1080p here. Does most sound formats too I'm watching one right now in DTS. It starts up surprisingly fast for being as old as it is too. You do need to manually set up your network connection for the LAN if you want to connect to the net for program content or any firmware updates. The manual is available on Samsung support. it was definitely worth the purchase. If you don't have all your modem info at hand, this firmware update from Samsung is MANDATORY. It eliminated the freezing problem I was having with certain HD-DVD's. All play perfect now. Samsung support offers it for download at their site, it is from 2013, and is just an iso file you burn to a CD and put in the player. It does the rest, just say yes with the remote.Read full review
