I first had the chance to view the animated Beatles movie, "Yellow Submarine", when it debuted on the CBS television network back in 1972. Since that time, I could never get enough of this landmark motion picture. I even got a real treat when the film aired on television on my birthday, 2 years in a row! Finally, in 1987, the movie made its official home video debut. What a thrill it was, at last, to own this classic film milestone in my very own library. This is the one that I grew up with. Never mind that The Beatles did not provide their own voices for their cartoon counterparts; what you have here is a film achievement that still holds up beautifully after more than 4 decades running. The images are unlike anything else ever seen in an animated movie. The colors are bright and crystal clear. And the visual effects are mind-boggling, even for 1968 standards. The story centers around the mythical community of Pepperland, where peace and love prevail. Alas; the Blue Meanies arrive to destroy everything that is good. They take over the land, bringing an element of sorrow and despair to the entire atmosphere, because they despise music. Old Fred goes to Liverpool, where he recruits The Beatles to help restore order back to Pepperland. Goodness and love triumph in grand fashion. The soundtrack features many classic Beatles songs, plus 3 newly-added tracks; "Only A Northern Song", "All Together Now" and "It's All Too Much". This original release of the film is the only way to see the cartoon Beatles perform the first verse of "Baby, You're A Rich Man". At the conclusion, watch the REAL Beatles clowning around. "Yellow Submarine" is all in the mind, ya' know!Read full review
The VHS is a great retro like experience. The DVD version is great, remastered but glossy and "fixed". I love the old rawness and original version of VHS even in these days of BlueRays and HD. It adds character to the movie and is a great romp through old style animation, graphic design and visual mixing with of course, the fantastic wonderful music. These makes a GREAT video for kids anytime even today! I have soft spot for it as a child watching it on TV as a daytime rerun after elementary school. I think any kid will hold it that close as well today.
I wish it weren't shrink wrapped. It's too old and rare to open. I had to order another.
