Easy to use great picture and sound nice looking player

I love this player! yes the technology didn't go in the direction Toshiba hoped but it plays regular movies flawlessly. To be able to buy a player that sold for $800 3 years ago for $62.00 today doesn't happen in many realms. The new standard players available at this time are very low quality. The disks freeze or are unreadable and yet this tank plays everything I throw at it. The picture is incredible using the component outputs. The only drawback is the slow startup time, be patient, and the fact that it converts the digital audio output to DTS automatically regardless of the encoding on the disk. The few hd-dvd's I have found and are able to play have worked beautifully and most have been available for 99 cents. it is very classy and expensive looking. I love it!
you cannot access features of the hd dvd player. you cannot get it updated. loads for a long time, freezes and locks dvd inside. no remote no fixing of that. looks great gives you the feeling of a pc features.crisp picture. very heavy and big for a dvd player.
I personally believe this player has a lot of issues from the factory even though i purchased it Refurbished which means it was repaired back to near factory new,the main issue with this player is it will not play 90 percent of Hddvds i understand that this format is obsolete and Toshiba was unable to master a lot of several players i do have several players that will play the majority of the Hddvds i have in my collection, but my recommendation is to stay away from the XA1 to many playability issues even though it has the highest possible firmware.
THe look of the player is absolutely superb Quality of image is good -also for dvds - sound is very good - espically the pcm out (6x) (quite good upscaling) Bad is: no 1080p, no 1080/24 (does not matter if you are only hd ready and not full hd) no possibility to patch it to be codefree for normal dvds The xe1 xe2 are better - but quite more expensive - and they do not look as good as the xa1
