This was the 2nd Media Player I owned, but the first network player. It performed it's basic service with satisfaction, but left me wanting more. The Wireless connection was limited to the tecnnology at the time, so I we were getting dropped connections all the time due to the distance of the kids' play room from the router. The USB port can be used for Flash Drives, but not an external HDD. So each time my kids wanted to watch their cartoons on this player, I would have transfer the files to a flash drive and delete the ones there were previously on it. It's not so much an issue now with the 16GB and 32GB are common today, but at the time 2gb where the common ones. IT was a pain to constantly copy new videos to a flash drive. IT's a great introduction player for someone who isn't tech savvy, but I would look at other options first before I would buy this player if you want to stream HD videos and you don't have NAS.Read full review
I've had 3 units at my house at some point. They work great, however, there are some cons and pros. Pros: Easy to use, Allow to watch/listen to files on your computer(s) and NAS devices, great quality. Cons: Don't support some of the common formats, Have problem streaming HD movies (freeze, skip), if left on for extended period of time, need to be unplugged to be reset, No updates to firmware in the past 3 years.
I have owned one of these units for years and have provided 3 or 4 units to friends and family. This device is not bad at streaming media, especially from a D-Link NAS, but I must admit that this unit is not for everyone. It is particularly sensitive when it comes to the types of files/codecs it will play. The menus can take time to navigate. I would say that one needs to become familiar with this unit before one will say that it is a good piece of equipment. A better media extender should be available, I just haven't found one yet.
I now own three of these units and they work fantastic. The only thing to remember is NOT to use the software that is bundled with the media player! Instead download the free Tversity software and use it instead. If you do this the media player will flawlessly play just about any media type available.
I own 7 of these, yes I said 7. We use them in our dental office and at home. I have ripped just the main movie from all of our DVDs to hard drives using "Any DVD" and "Nero". Now, a couple of clicks of a remote and our patients can watch the same movie at the same time, and my kids no longer have to handle the discs. No more waiting for the previews to finish or the menu to load. I'm sure they have released a newer version, but when something works why change it?
