Hoitsu was born into arich and powerful samurai family in Edo (present day Tokyo) and had all the advantages of the fines education in poetry, Noh drama, tea ceremony and painting. His eclectic painting education was practiced in Kyoto in the Kano School under Kano Takanobu (1740-1794) and Kano Korenobu (1753-1808), then under Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814) of theUkiyo-eschool, Watanabe Nangaku (1767-1813) of the Maruyama school, So Shiseki (1715-1786) of theNangaschool and finally under Tani Buncho (1763-1841). He became ordained as a buddhist monk in 1797, after living in Kyoto, he returned to Edo in 1809 to form his own painting workshop and to immerse in the study of the life and art of Ogata Korin (1658-1716). His attraction to Korin whose Rimpa style heconsciously sought to revive is related to the fact that a century earlier Hoitsu\'s family had been among Korin\'schief patrons andnumerous masterpieces by Korin were still preserved in their collection.
The Rimpa school\'s popularity was largely revived by Sakai Hoitsu who succeeded in establishing the Rinpa school in Edo. He also brought a greater attention to detail in his painting style. The Rimpa style continued to influence artists working in a variety of media throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Hoitsu\'s works of art are inmany important museum collections including the British Museum and Metropolitan Museum in New York. Click on links to view some of his works.
