The sword is 38 ¼ inches longwith the blade alone at 32 ¾inches long and 1 inch wide, and 5/16” thick.
The hilt bares the Rifle RegimentEmblem with the rare Laurel Wreath around it (or wreathed cartouche ). The rarelaurel wreath indicates the 60th Regiment of Foot started in 1757,renamed The King’s Royal Rifle Corps in 1881, (?) The Rifle Volunteer swordsdid not have the laurel wreath, but a plain ring.
The blade has a bronze insertedproof slug with a “ H W “ or “KW”.
The blade is etched with QueenVictoria\'s Royal cypher, which places the date of manufacture between the1837-1901. The blade is etched with \"HENRY WILKINSON PALL MALL LONDON\",Wilkinson moved his shop to Pall Mall around 1849, and the Company changed itsname to \"The Wilkinson Sword Company Ltd\" in 1887. Thus this sword was made between 1849and 1888.
The blade is etched with thescrollwork, the hanging or strung bugle emblem, the Victorian cipher, and thewords “ BY APPOINTMENT ”.
On the back spine of the bladetowards the guard it is stamped “29201”.I believe you can contactWilkinson with a serial number and they have records of who the swordwas sold too?The blade had been cleaned bysomeone a while ago and shows some areas of heavy pitting especially towardsthe tip (please see pictures).
There is a gold rope with a knotwrapped around the guard. The pommel is stepped and the grip has some of theshagreen, shark skin or ray skin worn away in some areas. The wire wrap isintact and tight. The guard and grip are tight with no play.
There is noscabbard with this sword.
Although a littlerough, this is a rare version of this sword that has seen some history, andwould be a good addition to any military or sword collection.
