KUMELA 1970 PENTTI SARPANEVA Emerald GEOMETRIC SYMBOL RELIEF VASE -Signed +Label:
$77.40

DESCRIPTION: for reference please see \' Fire and Sea \' - Scandinavian Glass 1930 - 2000 - Vigiwer and Pina- Pages64 & 65 for many morePentti Sarpanevanotable designs for Kumela.

Absolutely stunning Pentti Sarpaneva stylised and geometric abstract relief moulded vase produced for the Finnish Kumela factory in 1970 in a dazzling bejewelled emerald green surmounted with a lacey filigree fretwork copper mount designed by the great Turun Hopea. The iconic pentti Sarpaneva vase was produced in a variety of different sizes and colours including amber, amethyst, azure or teal blue. Pentti Sapaneva studied at The Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and was born in Finland in 1925. He sadly passed away in 1978 leaving a legacy of his lifetimes designs for all the world to appreciate. He was part of a very artistic family whereby the much acclaimed and world renowned Timo Sarpaneva was his younger brother. The vase starts with a mould blown square pontil base to which the piece rests. The latter surrounds an internal arena of very shallow concentric ripples and also houses an original silver and black Turun Hopea paper label - please see below or the last photo. The piece ascends to form a slightly textured series of four square panelled fascias. The latter are sublime decorated with four differing slightly raised abstract symbols. The first consists of two opposing semi circular crescents which flank a stylised slightly raised series of zig zag linear lines in light relief. The 2nd consists of two asymmetrical stepped and slightly rcessed stylised suns whilst the third panel featuresa much larger more dramatic version of the first panel. The fourth panel I believe is the most interesting and consists oftwo conjoined \' suns\'. The latter are embellished with stepped vertical recessed in light relief whilst its partner is adorned with a progressive series of steppedsei circles. The vases upper reaches form a slightly recessed broad emerald green band which perfectly house the almost filigree latticed fretwork mount designed by Turun Hopea. I am not an expert, by any means on metalwork whereby I believe the mount to be of a patinated copper or light brass. Two sides of the vases mount are quite plain with a shimmering rather elongated recessed panel whilst the other two consist of a pierced filigree fretwork series of two rows of stylised suns. The latter are framedwith golden copper borders and interspersed with square decoration free portals. The piece is truly superb and his, in the course of time become an iconic piece of Scandinavian artglass design. The very geometric textural, light relief square vase shimmers and glistens in both natural and unnatural light as chards of light refract and glimmer from its multitude of linear and geometric abstarct displays. The vase is cased to a crsytal clear glass of the utmost clarity that serves to heigten, lightand accentuate the sublimefrieze like series of panel above.
