  • In the mid 1940’s Frank McIntosh headed a small firm specializing in the design and development of radio and broadcast stations. Being on the forefront of this burgeoning industry he saw the many shortcomings of the professional equipment of the day. Most notably was the need for high-powered, low distortion amplifier.  Hiring engineer Gordon Gow as his assistant the duo researched and developed a landmark amplifier. The amplifier was so far superior in output and distortion specs it was at first met with disbelief. The audio test equipment of the day was not designed to test an amp of such exceeding performance characteristics. But the proof was in its performance. Word of mouth spread and demand grew thus Frank McIntosh & Gordon Gow had new day jobs and McIntosh Laboratory was born. Hindsight confirms the company introduced a new era of professional audio excellence and they were amongst the first to market professional equipment to the consumer. Thus nurturing the high-fidelity industry and spearheading it for years to come.

    For more than six decades McIntosh has maintained dominance in the high-end audio industry. They are the only surviving “foundational” high fidelity equipment manufacturer around today, still headquartered in Binghamton, New York, with operation and manufacturing carried out in the same method of the originators.  McIntosh’s permanence in the marketplace is owed to its history of phenomenal components, all adhering to the same design criterion set forth by Frank McIntosh and Gordon Gow; superior sonic performance and unmatched reliability. Every component was created with capacity so great that it will never be operated at or near its stress point.  A good reason why an estimated 80% of the McIntosh components produced since 1949 are still in use today and what’s more amazing is these same components are outperforming modern counterparts with the benefit of years of technological progression.  When you buy a McIntosh you’re buying a lifetime component!

    The McIntosh MC-275 was originally introduced in 1961 with a production run until 1970. It is historically one of the most significant and desirable amplifiers of the golden hi-fi era. It is legendary in design and sound, with a level of desirability by collectors and audiophiles unequalled by any other single component in the entire industry. Its popularity was so great, McIntosh re-released several versions of this amp over the years, yet the original version (as this amp is) is the most desirable of all, with a value appreciation rate unrivaled by any other.

      The craze over the McIntosh 275 is not without reason; it is truly a phenomenal sounding amplifier and best represents the “McIntosh tube sound” that millions of audiophiles cherish, and hundreds of other audio component manufactures unsuccessfully try to emulate.   Its sound is truly magical, reproducing music with a sense of liveliness and soul that is unique and sorely missed in the digital age. It stands-out from others in its amazing amount of forward thrust, punching out music in a lively, exciting way.  Its dynamic drive is the best you will hear. It is also remarkably transparent for a tube amp and presents an incredibly detailed sound stage. The various instruments are defined sharply with a sense of openness in between each. As you would expect from any McIntosh tube amp, the midrange is a pure delight, vocals and instruments are rendered with a naturalness and accurateness that sends a shiver down your spine. Yet the 275’s bass response is on a level of its own, very tight with highly textured detail of the lowest regions of the audio range.

      Simply put, the 275 is an icon of audio technology and represents golden era American ingenuity at its finest. Your only regret with the 275 is that you didn’t own one 50 years ago. Some of the many features and functions of the 275 include;

      McIntosh Style As the Harley Panhead helped to define the American motorcycle the MC-275 personifies the American tube amp. Its look is instantly recognizable and is always in style. It is one of the few components that visually express both muscle and class, a perfect parallel to its sound!
    • McIntosh Bifilar Wound Output Transformer The McIntosh Bifilar Wound Output Transformer with unity coupling is so special and unique it received six US government patents. While the patents have expired no other company can replicate this unique process. Mainly because most manufacturers\' don\'t produce their own transformers and the McIntosh transformer manufacturing process is expensive and requires skilled labor. This circuit gives you a basic advantage when you own any McIntosh amplifier, and is a main reason why no other amplifier can sound as pleasing as a McIntosh. The brilliant McIntosh unity coupled circuit gives you the lowest distortion performance from tubes and transformers. You get a reserve built into every McIntosh unit. In the power amplifiers it is not just reserve power, it is the reserve margin of safety for each piece and component used in the power amplifier. Nothing is run to its full limit. Everything is given a great safety margin. This kind of engineering means long life and more performance, a claim that is backed up by a 50 year history!
    • Three Output Configurations At the flip of the switch the MC-275 can change output. It is a standard stereo amp, a twin mono amp (act as two separate 75 watt amps, separate input jacks are provide),  and a monoblock effectively doubling the power output (150 watts) to a single channel
    • And Much More!

    Cosmetically amp  has some minor pitting, but no visible rust, dents, or damage. There is some lettering ware/fading in a few spots. Black paint has some scratches and ware. I noticed a few touch-ups on the transformers. Tubes all test good.  Unit has been sitting unused for many years in a living room setting. I did slowly power it up on a variac and listened to it for several hours. It sounds good, no hum or excessive distortion, both channels play strong and loud. Capacitors and other passive internal components are original. I would strongly recommend changing these sooner rather than later for optimum performance of this amp, a good suggestion for any piece of equipment approaching the 55 year mark!
