Eastern Connecticut, Circa 1780-1790.  A VERY RARE SIGNED  EXAMPLE OF E. TRACY THE GREATEST CONNECTICUT WINDSOR CHAIR MAKER.

This great chair is a great example of an Eastern Connecticut Windsor from the latter part of the 18th century. The uniquely turned legs are the very best, ALTHOUGH SLIGHT IN SIZE IT IS FULL HEIGHT. The BOLDLY shaped saddle seat and side stretchers and shaped center stretcher are classic Tracy School. The carved and stem bent crest is of hickory and the turned spindles are unique to the Tracy School.

SIGNED \"E. TRACY\", he is perhaps the best known Connecticut Windsor chairmaker\'s of the 18th Century. His examples are considered the pinnacle of Windsor chair making.

The Eastern Connecticut-Rhode Island border region was the home of a number of Windsor chair makers during and after the American Revolution.
A whole school of chair making evolved under one family led by Ebenezer Tracy. The captain, who lived and worked in Lisbon, created a unique and beautiful style, one marked by bold turnings, widely splayed legs and painstakingly carved seats.  The captain, his three sons, two sons-in-law, and various apprentices created thousands of highly distinctive chairs in various forms - writing arm, fan back, bow back, continuous arm and settee, among others. Today, surviving Tracy chairs are highly prized by collectors. For a similar example see, \"The Windsor Style in America\", by Charles Santore. Also, see the front picture of Santore\'s book for the exact turnings on the legs and saddle seat.

The BOW is fully intact with no breaks. The spindles are original and damage free. The legs are tight and the feet are full height and all original. The surface is a GREAT DARK GRUNGY SURFACE with large traces of the original red.  There is an old very tight seat split that was glued.  It is invisible and makes the chair very sturdy.

For a similar example see, \"The Windsor Style in America\", by Charles Santore; and \"American Woodenware\", by Warman, for a signed TRACY Windsor armchair with the identical leg turnings, also shown in the last photo.

Typical wear associated with the age of the item

IT HAS NOT BEEN ENDED OUT AND ALL THE FEET ARE ORIGINAL.

This great chair stands 36 1/2\" tall. The seat height is a full 16\" tall.  All five of this set has seat heights of 15 3/4 to 16\"\" but the legs and feet have not lost any noticeable height.  It is do to the wide splay of the legs.

Typical wear associated with the age of the item. The only loss is two small surface lines on the backside of the bow on the right side.  These are not cracked through, just surface cracks.  Very tight and stable.  This is the best preserved example of all the bowback\'s FROM THIS SET we have offered.
