Original 18th century EdwardScarlett metal frame spectacles with metal case

description:

A rare pair oforiginal antique 18th century steel spectacles or glasses with short stiff sidearms and circular loops that pressed against the temples above the ears. Theywere first designed by Edward Scarlett, a Londonoptician. The glasses have a maximum width of 4 5/8 inches (116 mm) and the side armshave a total length of 4 3/8 inches (110 mm). The eyes measure 1 3/8 inches (34 mm) and the space betweenthe lenses is exactly 7/8 inches (22 mm). The metal caseis 5 5/8 inches (144 mm) long and 1 5/8 inches (41 mm) wide. The interior is lined with a old red textile cloth. The hinges work perfectly and the case closes tightly.

Overallthe spectaclesare in very good condition for their age with no damage with some expected surface oxidation and a light play on the hinges with use over time. The old glass lenses are also original. On one of the arms an owner\'s initial \"A\" is visible (see picture).

The fact thatthey have the round circle-end arms, the pin-hinge and pinch-pin (to tightenthe lenses) could very well point to Scarlett as the maker. This is clearlyvisible on the pictures. The real genius in these is the hinge with the doublepin mechanism, one for the arms to swing and the other to hold the lenses inplace or loosen them.

You can still see the hand work done while making these specs. Thebending of the metal is not perfect and there are some flattened weld/soldermarks. The spectacles are also in the original metal case. these are inexcellent working condition and of exceptional historical importance in theoptical field.

They are uncleaned and as found in a Dutch private collection. This would make a greataddition to anyone’s collection of antique spectacles, lenses and ophthalmological collectibles.
