Outstanding Old Native American Pipe Tomahawk with Pewter Bands and Insert:
$287.00

I\'ve seen and handled a lot of real and reproduction Native American weapons over several decades and here\'s what I know about this one.I purchased it through an on-line sale about 10 years ago. The seller indicated that his father brought the item home one day when he was a child in the early 1960\'s. Beyond that, all that the seller knew about it was that it was old at that time. Because there were few pictures and what there were were lacking in quality, I took a flyer and hoped that I was buying something worthwhile. Iwas more than satisfied at the time and have remained convinced that this is an absolutely authentic and beautifully crafted mid-19th century itemever since. I hate to let it go but if it goes to someone who appreciates it, I guess that\'s just the way everything is meant to be; kept for a while, appreciated, and passed on. Itseems to draw well and could, I suppose, be smoked should the new owner choose to do so. You can see the remnants of a pewter or lead \"gasket\" around the head that, together with the pewter cap and nail arrangement have kept the heavy brass ax and pipe head tight over all the years of its existence. I believe the hand carved wooden haft is of osage orange wood which was a favorite for such purpose. The style of the ax and pipe head (including the \"bleeding heart\"cutout) is of a type that, according to John Balwin and other authors, was in common use by blacksmiths for trade in the mid 1800\'s. Note that the \"cross\" pewter insertdoes not necessarily indicate a Christian origin as such a decoration wasvery common amongNative Americans well before European influence. This is a heavy item and was probably primarily for ceremonial use although it would have functioned very effectively as a weapon as well.I\'ll start the item with a offer well below what I paid for it and trust that some of you will be knowledgeable enough to recognize its true value. No international shipping and please don\'t ask me to end the offerding early. Thanks for looking.
