PAIR Crude “F” Debossed Snuff / Blacking Bottles Stoddard Glass:
$229.57
Here is a GREAT PAIR of early 1850s New England utility / blacking bottles. This is the rectangular “snuff” form, with a debossed “F” on the base. This is very likely from South Stoddard (at Joseph Foster’s first furnace)since there were a number of shards found there. The “F” has always beenthought to be marked for Foster. It is almost always pontilled (as one is) but rarely seen with a smooth base. I suspect this mold was used right into the 1860s at the other Stoddard factories. LOADED with bubbles through both pieces, and fantastic colors!
Both \"appear\" to be perfect, but have VERY minor issues. One has a very slight flat area on the lip edge, other has a tiny edge flake. I have put them together for this reason... they do stand on their own merit individually! THIS IS A BUYING OPPORTUNITY! Beautiful examples of early American (civil war era) utilitarian jars.
