Extremely Rare
16mm B&W Film
Private Backlot Tour of
Chaplin Studios
Post 1947
16mm black and white film showing a rare glimpse into Chaplin Studios backlotnear Sunset Blvdand La Brea Ave in Hollywood. My sense from visual clues is that this was shot after 1947 and prior to the end of 1953 when Chaplin Studios was sold. The reel is marked with a piece of tape reading \"Kathryn Reed Print\". That may be the name of the woman seen on the tour.
In this raw footageChaplin Studioslooks like a recently vacated ghost town. Everything from the studios, however, is still in place. The woman is guided by a gentleman who looks a little like Chaplin himself. I investigated whether this man might be Chaplin\'s brother Sydney or his half-brother Wheeler Dryden but someone wrote and identified him as Roland (Rollie) Totheroh, Chaplin\'s cameraman from 1916 to 1952. Rollie and the woman take a leisurely stroll and she\'s shownvarious sets and famous props from old Chaplin films. We see the rowboat used in the filmMonsieur Verdoux(1947). We see the airplane used in The Great Dictator (1940) hanging from the rafters ~ as well as (what I suspect is) a spool of barbed wire usedin the concentration camp scenes. We see some of the giant gears used in Modern Times (1936) and what I believe is the punch clock and time card slots. We see a stack of old film reels unceremoniously piledagainst a wall outdoors (oh no!!)We also seeChaplin\'sname andfootprintsinscribedin a cement sidewalk in 1918 during the studio\'s construction.
PossiblyBEST OF ALL comes towards the end of the reel when the gentleman slips through a doorway and starts bringing out Chaplin\'s iconictramp costume...coat, vest, shoes, and bowler hat. Items are examined closelywith awe and grateful appreciation. The articles are examined from all angles. This footage could be invaluable in the authentication of surviving articles if any of those pieces\' authenticity is ever in dispute.
It looks like there\'s about 425 feet of film...so about 11 or 12 minutes. There are three instances where the footage washes out to blankness and then comes back again. Towards the end of the reel when they start examining the bowler hat the film begins to get just slightly buckled. There\'s no vinegar smell. Overall - the film is in very good condition. The last part of the footage I examined showed the gates open and close again and the Chaplin Studios placard is shown.
Metal Reel Measures 10.5 Inches. No sound.
Condition:
Sometimes B&W is rich...sometimes it fades. Three short sections where imagery fades and comes back. Some mild warping towards end of reel.
