Rare 1952 11.5” Alps “CADILLAC Eldorado” Convertible Friction Tin Toy Car w/Box
Description: exceedingly rare vintage Alps / Iwaya 1952 Cadillac Eldorado convertible friction tin toy car. A great miniature version of this classic American luxury car!!
This splendid toy was very successful in the marketplace, but it still quite difficult to find one today in good condition as Alps produced this toy and their variations, for only 3 years, and they are quite scarce today.
This is the earliest version with correct “Cadillac” logo and badges (*). All made of black painted tin body and gray chassis, celluloid windshield with tin frame, chromed radiator grill, bumpers and lights, hood and tail ornaments and logo on sides, litho tin license plate (“3-1154”). Black treaded rubber tires with white bands and chromed and painted tin hubcaps. Well detailed litho tin upholstery, dashboard, radio and door interior panels with white hard plastic and tin steering-wheel. Friction operated mechanism on rear wheels with steerable front wheels.
This beautiful car comes with its very attractive box constructed of strong red lined cardboard with great graphics on front label.
Made in Japan by Alps / Iwaya, circa 1952.
Dimensions: 11-5/8\" (29.5 cm) long.
Condition: Minor markings and scratches here and there (see pictures.) Rear right hubcap missing (easy to replace.) Tiny, not noticeable, dent to hood. Slightly worn chrome. Steering and friction motor works nice and quietly. Otherwise, fine to very fine overall condition. Box shows some surface wear and staining.
Still a very nice complete car. Hard to find.
(*) After a few months in production, the General Motors legal department sternly pointed out to the company that they had no license to produce this toy, so Alps changed the “Cadillac” name on the car to \"Convertible\" and a new \"W\" badges replaced the typical “V”, reflecting the change and to avoid a lawsuit.
