In the mid 1960s, a few of the major Japanese radio manufacturers developed an \"auto tuning\" fad, featuring radios with fancy scanning mechanisms. These mechanisms are crude by comparison with today\'s digital scanners, but still make for very interesting technological artifacts. The Sony 2FA-24Wwas introduced in 1966 andhas the distinction of being featured in the 1967 James Bond film “You Only Live Twice.” Thismini FM-only radio does not come around very often and deservesto be in every early transistor radio and Sony collection.
The 2FA-24W is packed with 11 transistors. The top control button doubles as a volume/power knob andas the scanning switch. When depressed, the switch compresses a mainspring, and whenreleased the dial begins to rotate. The dial continues to rotate until a strong station is reached. (The radio hasa signal strength meter connected to the mechanical spring system, and themeter then trips a mechanism and relases all the remaining compression of the spring. The result: auto-tuning.) The2FA-24Wis featured in a number of classic transistor radio websites, including: [link removed by ],
