Please check other vintagesewing-machine items I am offering this week - happy to combine postage where practical
Despite a lot of research, I don't think anyone has been able to pin down the maker of the American Gem toy sewing machine. What is known is that the model is extremely rare and, in this special form with the added wheel "gearing", is one of the toughest toy machines to find. Most authorities guess its date at the 1880s, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a decade later than this. This particular example is totally original and is in generally-good condition. The daisy decoration on the base is near 100% perfect, although there isblack paint missing from the upright of the arm - please check out the pictures.
Machine sits on its original varnished pine base. The multiplier wheel was not an add-on option, for the cast-iron treadle base was specially made for the up-market version, with the pivot arm an integral part of the casting. The base measures 7-inches wide x 5. Total machine height is 8 inches. The mechanism turn freely and there is no rust.
