An Original and Very Rare 1917 Dated MK II Wire Cutter Attachment for the British .303 SMLE Enfield Rifle Manufactured by C.H. Pugh Of Birmingham, England.
They were attached to SMLE rifles in the trenches and when \"Going Over The Top\" they were used to cut barbed wire that you came across as you progressed through no-mans land towards the enemy.
The Enfield rifle cutter worked bypicking up the wire on the top of the bayonet and the wire slides down the back of the blade into the jaws. You continue pushing with the rifle so that the axis of rotation is below the pivot point. The jaws pivot to the rear and then the jaws close cutting the wire. Once the wire is cut, the cutter re-arms and is ready for the next wire. This is all done without breaking stride. They were very effective in the field.
This is a very rare item to find. It is complete and original.
It is very nicely stamped with \"No. 17886-15 C.H. Pugh Birmingham England MK II 1917\" see the photographs.
The cutter rotates around the bracket freely and the cutter jaws operates exactly as they should.
The attachment it fitted to the barrel of the rifle and secured with a large bracket and wing nut which both operate smoothly.
