RARE Antique Edward Riley Boxwood 5 Key C Clarinet New York 1820s Wood Brass NR For Sale

ANTIQUE EDWARD RILEY BOXWOOD CLARINET

Up for sale is a VERY NICE antique 5-key boxwood C clarinet made by Edward Riley (1769-1829) in New York City. Based on the street address marked on the instrument (29 Chatham St.), this clarinet was made between 1819 and 1831 (Riley\'s widow and two sons took over the business until 1831). The body of the clarinet is made of boxwood and the keys are made of brass. It has a hard plastic(?) mouthpiece that is not original, but fits OK. The instrument is marked in 4 different places with the manufacturer\'s name (see photos). The clarinet measures about 16 5/8\" long without the mouthpiece (19\" with mouthpiece inserted).Condition of this boxwood clarinet appears to be VERY GOOD. I don\'t see any cracks in the wooden body or bell. The short key near the bottom (3rd key up from the bell) appears to be stuck, but all the other keys are functioning properly. The mouthpiece has some chipping and loss (see closeup photo). Overall, this collectible clarinet displays well and would make a wonderful conversation piece or a great addition to a clarinet collection.
