RARE Antique Signed Civil War Rodman Coastal Cannon Arsenal Model Salute Gun

…… After some searching on the internet I was able to identify the large, antique, Black Powder Salute Signal Cannon in this sale. It is an exact copy of a huge, 15” Rodman Coastal Fort Cannon. The barrel measures 18 ½” long with a 1 ½” diameter bore. Including the iron recoil carriage and the curved track this Rodman Salute Cannon measures 24 ½” long by 15” wide at the curve. If you are a student of Civil War armament, then you already know about Rodman Cannons, which were the largest cannons in the world.  The Rodman was designed by Union artilleryman Thomas Jackson Rodman (1815–1871) who designed a series of American Civil War–era Columbiads Coastal Cannon designed to fire both shot and shell. These heavy guns were intended to be mounted in seacoast fortifications and came is 8-inch, 10-inch, 13-inch, 15-inch, and 20-inch bore. Other than size, the guns were all nearly identical in design, with a curving bottle shape. The Civil War Period 15” Rodman Black Powder Gun Salute Cannon in this sale is just like the 15” bore size, because of the irpn carriage. We have added a photograph at the bottom depicting a Civil War 15” Rodman. Specifications for the 15-inch Rodman gun was 15 feet, 10 inches long, with a bore length of 13 feet, 9 inches, or 11 times caliber. Two types of ammunition were provided--a 450-pound solid shot, and a 330-pound explosive shell carrying a 17-pound bursting charge. The new gun proved a great success, although its huge size and weight, 49,000 pounds for the barrel alone, made it practical only for fixed positions in forts or permanent batteries. It was a 15-inch Rodman at Ft. Monroe that kept the Confederate iron clad CSS Virginia (The Merrimac) at bay during her struggle with the USS Monitor.

…… After searching the net I finally found another rare  Rodman Salute Cannon like the example we are listing tonight. It sold at Julia’s sale and was called, an Arsenal Gun. They said the Fort Pitt Foundry cast these 1/10 scale cannon to give as presentations to important people. I then noticed that the Julia cannon was marked around the bore of the barrel. Although the cannon we are listing is also marked around the bore, it is worn to a point where it is difficult to read. At the top you can see Ft Pitt and at the bottom you can see 50,00 and some more letters. There also are markings on the side of one mounting pin. It looks like the number 50?? and the date 1867 stamped on the outside edge. The cannon Julia’s sale sold was restored and it did not have the curve track like the example in the sale. If you search you will find the five figure price it sold for. The surface you see in our photographs is the original, untouched surface. There is only one problem with this very Rare Rodman Salute Cannon. Underneath the recoil carriage and a round hole, that fits over a pin on the curved track so it could pivot from side to side. In the photographs you will see a very old break at this hole. That’s it! The rest of this very rare, museum quality, Rodman Arsenal Signal Cannon is original and there have never been any restorations.

…… As you might expect this large, Cast Iron Cannon and Carriage is very heavy. 89 pounds to be exact. It will take special packing and a wood skid to ship it safely. PLEASE, don’t offer on this sale until you contact us for an accurate shipping costs. UPS is also using a new billing structure which calculates the cost of shipping using Dimensional weight instead of the actual weight of the package. More information about this change can be found on UPS’s website and if you see an increase in the shipping calculator, this is why.

If you find that there is a discrepancy between \'s estimate and your invoiced shipping cost, we apologize. We are currently working closely with to have the calculator provide accurate costs. In the meantime, we are manually and accurately adjusting each invoice after the close of the sale. We assure you that we do not make money on shipping! We also assure you that we properly and professionally pack every item as well as fully insure each package. At the end of each day, any buyer who has paid $5 or more over actual shipping costs, will receive a refund!

Payments:

Payment must be received within 5 days of receiving an invoice. PayPal payments are preferred and if payment, or contact from the buyer, isn\'t received within 5 days, an dispute will be opened. This dispute will be closed within 4 days after being opened and the item will be re-listed.  If you have a problem, please call us and we will help you solve it.
