RARE Antique SODA FOUNTAIN DRINK DISPENSER - ORANGE NIP - Big Counter-Top Globe:
$405.00

RARE!..ORIGINAL!..RARE!...
\"ORANGE NIP\" SODA FOUNTAIN BAR-TOP DISPENSER
Very Large & Showy With Advertising
Drink Was Banned from Production in 1923

I have been unable to find another example of this rare soda fountain orange drink dispenser anywhere. I did find an ad for it in a 1923 Pharmacy supply catalog (see ad photo above) and a couple of articles from the same period that discuss the TOXIC nature of this drink. Apparently it was invented and promoted by the Armour Co. as a \"healthy alternative\" to the popular Cola drinks. However, the \"Report of the California State Board of Health for 1921\" stated:\"A beverage labeled \'Orange Nip Prepared from Pure Orange Juice\' has recently been analyzed by this bureau and found to consist entirely of sugar, water, citric acid, orange flavor and orange peel, Coal tar dye and less than one half of one percent of orange juice.\"
In March of 1922, the California Dept. of Health listed Orange Nip as \"condemned as unfit for food\" and \"drink and syrup adulterated and mislabeled by Armour & Co. - San Francisco and Los Angeles.\"

Perhaps we now know why this dispenser and brand name are so rare. Coal tar drink just never did catch on.

This piece is remarkably intact and original, although it shows signs of a long life. The original paint is scratched and worn in places, and the lettering in silver and gold and black is sometimes kind of vague, but since it appears full-size in three places around the globe, it is readable. There are a few shallow dents. Someone has sprayed the entire interior with aluminum paint to cover up rusted iron parts, and the coil does not seem to be hooked up, but I believe with very little work this piece could be brought back to functional life. Coal tar - YUM!

This is an imposing piece! The big orange outer globe is 19 inches in diameter and is made from sheet aluminum. The three cabriole feet are cast aluminum. The inner liner is steel as is the cooling coil and the enameled syrup tray. The heavy-duty spigot is silver plated brass or bronze. There is no indication that there was ever an exterior tube as pictured in the old add above. The whole thing stands 22 inches - almost 2 feet tall.

Look at all of the photos carefully. Read all of the above description.
If you still have questions, ask them early in the sale.

This is a heavy piece and the buyer will pay shipping from zip code 76574 based on a well-packaged box of 33-34 pounds or the item
may be picked up at no charge in Taylor, TX about 30 minutes from Austin by special arrangement.
