An outstanding quality and rare two-color Westerwald saltglazed stoneware tavern mug / tankard with an applied frontal badge with a GR cypher filled in blue; Westerwald region, Germany, circa 1715 - 1725.
This is quite a rare type of GR mug or tankard as it glazed within the design in both manganese and blue. I don\'t recall manyother GRsthat arecolored in this particular way. The quality of the design is sharp and excellent, typical of the early GR (King George = Georgius Rex) mugs, jugs and tankards andwe canconfidently date this example to the reign of George I.
The tankard is approximately 5 7/8 inches tall with two bands of turning enclosing a band of incised leaves and tulip flowers with acentral GR emblem in a military-style blazon. The loop handle has a peg-hole in the top to enable a pewter mount to be fitted- presumably the option of the owner. This would prevent flies and dirt from getting into the beer. There is an incised number 4 capacity mark near the top of the handle. The diameter at the base is approximately 4 3/16 inches.
The condition is excellent with the exception of a short hairline in the rim (photo #9). There are no chips and no restoration:really a fantastic and rare addition to any German stoneware collection or dealer’s inventory of Westerwald / saltglazed stoneware. Thanks for following harmic.little on .
