Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleA truly fabulous and rare John Dwight Fulham Pottery saltglazed stoneware store jar, crock, or \'Shop Pot’ - the upper part glazed with a stunning, rich, dark ginger-brown dip; the lower part with a beige ‘slip\'; London, Fulham, John Dwight factory, circa 1725. Examples of these noble and superbly potted jars excavated at the site of John Dwight\'s Fulham pottery can be seen in Chris Green\'s excellent monograph John Dwight\'s Fulham Pottery Excavations 1971-79 [1999], Cat. Nos. 312-4 (p.152) and 335-7 (p.155).Green interestingly points out the scarcity of such jars among the seventeenth century excavation levels and suggests that the fact that they appear in quantity after 1725 suggests a shift away from the tavern trade towards the burgeoning retail, industrial and shop market. As London expanded rapidly in the early years of the eighteenth century, it is clear that the demand for storage jars for all kinds of solids, liquids and powders expanded enormously. It is clear from the excavations that the Fulham pottery responded rapidly to this demand. The ability to tap into this market was enabled to a great degree by the fact that saltglazed stoneware was a splendid and durable material for storing liquids of all kinds including corrosive chemicals and acids. The jar is large, measuring 9 11/16 inches tall and extremely handsome in its potting and proportions. The rich salt glaze is fabulous to look at. I bought this jar in London about 15 years ago and I shall be sad to see it go.Condition for such an early utility jar is excellent - there are some kiln \'scars\' that you can see in the photos and chipping around the foot but nothing significant to detract from what is a truly fabulous example of Fulham salt glaze. This is a rare and hard-to-find salt glaze stoneware jar - a high-end item for your dealer\'s inventory!
