Rare miniature hand-crank lock-stitch sewing machine Moldacot Bonita 1886:
$485.00

I\'m clearing my storeroom and finding more and more sewing machine items from when I collected and dealt in these items. Please check other pieces I am offering this week.

A rare Bonita version of the 1886 Moldacot sewing machine.

First, a little history:

The Moldacot was introduced in 1886 and became a cause celebe when it was later revealed that it was little more than a fraud aimed at parting shareholders from their cash.

After all the fuss had died down, the machines were sold off by the Company liquidator and a small number were bought by an Italian company who re-named it The Bonita.

Whilst Moldacot machines do turn up, the Bonita is much harder to find.

Let me quote you from the International Society (ISMACS) article on the Company:

\"A few machines were supposedly sold to an Italian firm and renamed Bonita (though Bonita is Spanish for beautiful) probably as a novelty more than anything. These are amongst the most sought after models and as rare as hens teeth.\"

You can find out more about the Moldacot and the Bonita here:

This particular example, made almost entirely from brass, is totally complete - even having its miniature shuttle and bobbin.

The nickel plating on the Bonita never seems to have survived as well as that on the commoner Moldacot version and it’s possible that the Italian Company bought the machines in unplated form and did their own less-than-perfect plating job themselves.

The plating on this one has suffered but there is no rust and, although the machine has been given a rudimentary clean, more-thorough loving care might well improve the finish.

The machine measures around 8 inches high.

I did actually get one of these sewing some years ago but it was super-hard work and I wouldn’t want to attempt to sew up a pair of drapes with one, but in case you want to try, I will enclose a photocopy of the Moldacot instruction book
