Rare Old Antique Micmac Indian Birch Bark & Porcupine Quill Basket / Box For Sale

Up for sale is a beautifully crafted and very old round birch bark and porcupine quill basket made by a Native American artist from the Micmac tribe, one of the tribes from the eastern US and Canada. The box itself was made of birch bark with a wooden base. The sides were lined with wrapped roots with woven porcupine quill accents. Check out the way the weaver crafted an inner collar of birch bark so that the lid fits smoothly with no gaps. The centerpiece of the basket is the fancy geometric quillwork covering the top of the lid, and I really like the way the weaver used natural dyes to create a striped effect. These old boxes somewhat resemble the Great Lakes porcupine quill boxes, but these Micmac baskets are usually much older and are much less common. The basket is old enough to have developed an awesome aged patina. This unusual artifact will be an outstanding addition to someone\'s collection.

The basket is a nice largish size for one of these old Micmac Indian baskets, measuring 4\" across and just over 2½\" deep. This basket is in really nice condition for its advanced age (from the mid-1800\'s.) There are a few spots where the quillwork and the root bindings are missing, but the underlying basket is in perfect condition with no breaks. Long ago, someone lined the basket in old striped brown paper (probably an old paper bag) but I really don\'t consider this a flaw. I have taken photos of all sides so you can see. A beautiful and unusual antique Micmac quill box!
