Help me figure this one out!! Mr. Pflueger applied for a patent in 1928 for the \"medalist\" line of fly reels.. The patent was granted by 1930. In the 1931 Pflueger Catelogue \"MEDALIST\" was introduced.. I believe it was his answer to the great Hardy reels with a ROUND LINE GUIDE OR EYE that were in the U.S. markets. The specifications from 1930 to 1940\'s were as follows:
Trademark, Pflueger Medalist , Made in the USA on the spool latch cover
Model #, \"patented\" stamped on the reel body below the foot
Bronze spindle
Round metal Diamolite line guard
6 rivets around the spool latch cover
Knurled mteal drag knob
Sculpted cross pillars, riveted to the body
The 1931 models were as follows: Right hand wind/round line guard:1492,1494,1496
Right hand wind/no line guard: 1392,1394,1396
Left hand wind/round line guard 1592.1594,1596
In 1937 the 1396, 1592 and 1596 were dropped.. The spools were changed so they could be weighted...
I believe this Round Eyereel WHICH HAS THE CAGED PILLARS AS AN ARBOR, AND IS OVERSTAMPED WITH 1494TO HAVE BEEN A 1396, PULLED FROM STOCK AND OVERSTAMPED WITH A \"4\" OVER THE \"3\"... It is a Right Hand Wind. I dont have a clue why they did it.. but SEE FOR YOURSELF.. the reel is double click/pawl with no drag or drag knob... its is very clean , operates perfect... Its a shame Pflueger didnt have powder coated paint in the day because this one would have been beautiful.. works like a stop watch.. COLLECTORS.. Im cleaning out my many reels.. watch for other Round eyes from my collection and give this one a fine home.. The reel measures 4\" in diameter and has a narrow , caged arbor. I believe it could easily handle 8 wt line and plenty backing.. perfect for your bamboo rods... so Im selling a 1396/1496 ROUND EYE PHLUEGER MEDALIST FLY REEL.. see for yourself.. (I will gladly stand corrected as we are blessed with some fine reel experts out there) Good luck offerding
