This listing is for a fine circa 1890 French faience art pottery figural monkey form inkwell by Émile Gallé. It measures 3 1/8 inches or 8 cm high and is 3 ¾ inches or 9.5 cm at its widest.
The inkwell features a half bust of a very happy monkey; he is holding his hands in front of him holding two sheet of music. The monkey is dressed in floral decorated robes of burnt orange and white, with blue sleeves and brown back. It is further enhanced with heavy applied gold highlights. He also wears a hat on his head. It is signed on the bottom of the base. Émile Gallé (1846-1904) is known as one of the founders of the French art nouveau movement, and he\'s mostly known as a maker of glass. But he also made furniture, and he grew up in a family of potters. And in his early career in the 1880s and 1890s, he made pottery, especially this type of pottery. You can see the white color of this glaze. It\'s made white by adding tin, which oxidizes and goes white over the pottery base. We call this faience, or tin-glazed earthenware. It\'s very traditional to the French provinces. Gallé was working in the French provinces, in Nancy, when he made this faience inkwell.
The inkwell is in good condition; there is the usual glaze faience glaze cracklure. Please see the many photographs for more on the look and condition of this fine piece, as they are an important part of the description.
