DESCRIPTION: Very scarce Japanese version of the Kirsch-Hamilton “Aurora” color changing modernist clock.

Only about 1000 of these were made in the 1980’s. I’ve sold a few Aurora’s over the years, but this is the first Japanese version that I’ve seen. The Japanese version had the most beautiful colors and nicest case of all the versions of Aurora clocks. They have a very bright chrome-like finish that was achieved by bright dipping and clear anodizing the aluminum case. They also used a different bulb—this uses three cool running cathode fluorescent tubes that are accessed from the bottom (see last photos). However, the movements employed plastic gears which wore out, and the lamps were placed too near the rear polarizer, which was also glued and impossible to replace. I would suggest visiting Barry Gamble’s Chrono-Art website for a complete description of this clock.

CONDITION: The case is quite presentable with only some very minor scattered scratches. The clock sets easily and runs fine, but the motor does have a slight hum. The bulb assembly will need work as only one bulb is presently working, so the dial is very dim—Chrono-Art can replace the bulbs and circuit board for $59 + shipping if you mail them the bulb assembly, which just plugs in and is easily removed. No visible cracks to the filters, and the colors are strong. The three magnets that hold on the back are all intact.
