After celebrating a rather depressing 66th birthday last year, I decided I needed a quest, an adventure into the unknown, to do something I had never done before, so the 67th wouldn\'t be as grim. Although always an admirer of music, I have no skill, no natural rhythm, and no training in anything musical beyond a kazoo, so I thought, there would be a test. Going to an exhibit of paintings by my favoriteartist, Carroll Cloar, I foundback in the 30\'s he had played a RegalTiple (which I mistook for a ukulele) made in Chicago. I had my instrument and envisioned myself the Jimi Hendrix of Ukuleles, ripping off chords on my up-side down instrument lefthanded. Of course reality crept in when I found Pineapple Pete\'s Ukulele School on line and began to work on it. The good news - the Ukulele is the easiest instrument to learn how to play, and yes, with all the on-line tools, if you want to fumble around, and spend the time, you can beat out some mean tunes. Now back to the sale. As always, I began to collect Regal instruments, buying them for friends, and looking for the perfect axe. After scoringa few soprano Ukes, and lucking into aConcert one,I began get curious as to the history of the Regal Company, and how did Chicago become the center of Ukulele making so soon after the instrument\'s origins in Hawaii? Fortunately this book came out and answered some of my questions. With beautiful photos, vintage advertisements, and Regalephemera, its 320 12\" x 9\" pages provide just about as much information as is available, on this forgotten episode of American history.
