1940 Philco AM and Shortwave Radio Model 40-140

For sale, a RARE and meticulously restored Philco model 40-140 – It is a sight to behold. This prewar radio was made just before WWII and is prized for its Art Deco design and renowned Philco performance! There were 3 models made off this sturdy chassis. This table model was similar to Model 40-130, but added a third band (shortwave, 5.7 to 18 mc). It also used six tubes and operated on AC only. Its original selling price was $35 which is the equaling of almost $600 today – in a time when the depression was still in full force, no small sum. Philco made just fewer than 17,000 of these beauties. AM stations come in quite well and even Shortwave stations came in for me at night when I attached my own long wire antenna bringing in stations from around the US as well as Cuba. This example even has its original back – which is very uncommon, and the original labels are still affixed on the back and the bottom. As you can hear, this Philco looks just stunning with its amazing cabinet and it sounds perfect! The knobs work as designed with no slipping and there is no background hum. The radio has had an electronic restoration and plays great. The chassis was cleaned, all controls knobs were cleaned and lubricated, the tubes were checked and any weak ones replaced, caps replaced as needed, a new Grille Cloth was installed – period appropriate. It was thoroughly bench tested.
Philco History
Philco was founded in 1892 as Helios Electric Company and manufactured carbon-arc lamps. As this industry diminished, in 1906, the company was repurposed as the Philadelphia Storage Battery Company and began making batteries. Philco got into the booming radio business in 1926 following other famous radio companies as Atwater Kent, Zenith, & RCA. By the 1930’s Philco was selling more radios than any other maker – a position it held until the 1950’s.
Today, vintage Philco Radios continue to be highly collectible and one of the most sought after antique radio brands for collectors.
As with any radio thisold, you will find blemishes and imperfections on the top, sides, back, bottom,and front – including a couple small veneer repairs, but nothing that detractsfrom the overall look of the radio. All veneer is tight and straight. ThisPhilco is perfect for collectors and would make a wonderful addition to yourradio collection or antique collection. Its Art Deco design will go with almostany décor. Philcos in this condition do not come up for sale often – this isa good chance to take advantage with and a very low starting offer atjust $9.99.
