1938 Zenith Tombstone 6S229AM and Short Wave (SW) Radio!

This6 tube radio has been restored both electronically and cosmetically by aprofessional restorer. It has all of its original components with theexception of the grille cloth which is a period appropriate replacement, alsothe cord/plug was likely replaced at one time but is vintage 1940’s. It soundsexcellent and pulls in stations very well both near and far both with andwithout using an external antenna. It has a broadcast band and 2 SW bandsand I was able to receive a few SW stations late at night including stationsfrom Europe, and Radio Havana Cuba. This Zenith is stunningly beautiful –they are not particularly rare – but they are becoming lessand less common, and they are uncommon at this level of restoration – thequality of the restoration is very nice as you can see from the photos. The 6S229is highly collectible and sought after for its famous large reflective blackdial, for the Lightning Bolt \"Z\" pointer, the wooden Z etched knobs,the intricate wood latticed grill, and the faux finish, a paper-like filmprinted & textured to look like wood. It is easily damaged and most modelssurviving to this date have had them stripped off - and the cabinet re-finishedusing lacquer which exposes the niceveneer underneath – I am not sure which example we have here – the faux finishor the veneer – but one thing is for sure - it looks spectacular ! This is aBIG Tombstone and it stands out. At 19 inches tall and 14 inches wide – it hasquite a presence and will be a centerpiece in your home or office! There’s no doubt this radio broadcast such notable 1938historical events as the Nazi’s marching into Austria, Orson Welles broadcastshis adaptation of H.G. Wells\'s War of the Worlds, and the Yankees beating theCubs in the World Series. It was certainly the centerpiece and focal point ofan American Family’s home in the late 1930’s and 1940’s. As you can see from the video - it sounds and works perfect! This Zenith 6S229 has been electronically restored. The finish is virtually perfect and the stains used were of very high quality and mixed to match as close to the original color and shine as possible. On the top there are a couple veneer imperfections present but they do not detract from the overall look of the radio and they are tight (not expanding). The original Z knobs are all present and in great functional condition. All tubes were checked and any weak ones replaced as needed, capacitors and resistors were replaced as needed, any components found to be out of tolerance or in poor shape was replaced. The dial lights was replaced. The controls were cleaned and lubricated and the chassis was cleaned. The radio was also aligned to original factory specs and then it was thoroughly bench tested. The Dial light lights up highlighting the reflective details of the dial scale and it is breathtaking in a dark room. Zenith really knew how to make impressive dials back in the late 1930’s! The dial needle moves in sync with the tuning knob as designed and it is in good condition as is the dial scale. The knobs are on/off, tuning, band selection, and tone. Specs: Radio is a three waveband ac-powered receiver using 6 tubes:- 6A8G (mixer/LO), 6K7G (IF), 6H6G (2nd detector/AVC), 6F5G (1st af), 6F6G (af power amp), 5Y4G (rectifier). Coverage is from 550-1750kc (standard broadcast), 1800-5600kc (shortwave 1) and 5600-18500kc (shortwave 2). Zenith heavily advertised this model in 1938 – it sold for about $44 dollars – One ad reads:
“1938 ZENITH TABLE MODEL 6S229 AMERICAN AND FOREIGN – 6 Tubes that will bring in stations the world over. A Powerful modern receiver in a compact cabinet.”
Mind you – Zenith Consoles were still the big sellers of this era – so this Tombstone may seem big by today’s standards – but was considered compact in the late 1930’s. For some perspective - $44 in 1938 was the equivalent of about $750 in today’s dollars – and $44 was about the cost of 2 months’ rent! This model is hard to find in the good restored condition – and we are offering it with NO RESERVE AND AT A VERY LOW STARTING offer! All external components are original with the exception of the grille cloth and cord/plug. This Zenith Tombstone is a rare opportunity for a collector to have a true classic in their collection! And it’s not too early to start your Christmas shopping – this would make a unique gift for someone special – or even for yourself!

Note: If the USPS offers Priority Mail for essentially the same price as Standard based on your location code from where I am located – I will upgrade your shipment to Priority Mail for free.
