Small WESTERWALD saltglazed German stoneware GR JUG, Circa 1740:
$290.00

A small saltglazed stoneware Westerwald jug with a frontal medallion enclosing the GR (Georgius Rex) medallion within a laurel wreath surround; all around the medallion are pointed leaves and scrolling foliage in sgraffito technique; the neck reeded and glazed in manganese purple; the reverse with a no.\'6\' capacity mark; Germany, Westerwald region, circa 1730 - 1750.

These jugs were made in the Westerwald region in great numbers in the reigns of the three Georgesand exported to England where they were popular as patriotic drinkingwares in the inns and taverns. Many more were re-exported to the American colonies where they have been found in great numbers on archaeologicalsites and thus form an interesting part of the early history of the American colonies.

This super little jug is just 6 3/8 inches tall and has a beautifully molded medallion with a large GR symbol with a crown above it and delicate foliage all around. The neck is finely reeded and colored in a beautiful blackberry wash. The body is decorated in sgraffito with leaves and foliage. The reverse has an incised capacity number \'6\'.

The condition is not the best. There is a restored section of the rim which is just left of the handle and a crack line that goes all the way from the rim down and across the body below the capacity mark 6 and then all the way back up to the rim on the other side. This large section which includes the entire handle was broken out and glued back. In addition there are related hairlines to the damage that was done. Otherwise, this little jug would make a great addition to any collection of patriotic / political Westerwald wares. Thank you for offerding! !
