\"SQUIRREL & TREE STUMP\" Mechanical Bank Cast Iron Antique : $866.00
For sale tonight is a cast iron antique mechanical bank called the \"SQUIRREL & TREE STUMP\". It was manufactured by the Mechanical Novelty Works, New Britain, Connecticut circa 1890\'s. It was originally known as the \"Squirrel Bank\" and was patented on June 28, 1881. Like the squirrel who saves acorns in a hollowed tree stump, the child who saves pennies will turn them into dollars and therefore, never go hungry, nor want for anything. Lessons teaching children the value of thrift and economy were ever present in Victorian society. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage. To operate, a coin is placed on the acorn being held by the squirrel. The lever at the foot of the squirrel is depressed and the squirrel tips forward dropping the coin into the top of the stump. It works well and is approximately 7 1/2\" long, 4\" wide and 4 1/2\" high. This is a great opportunity to make this seldom seen bank a part of your collection.
